ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Candace Blevins lives with her husband of 19 years and their two daughters. When not working or driving kids all over the place she can be found reading, writing, meditating, or swimming.

Candace writes Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, Contemporary BDSM Romance, and a kick-ass Motorcycle Club series.

Her urban fantasy series, Only Human, gives us a world where weredragons, werewolves, werelions, three different species of vampires, as well as a variety of other mythological beings exist.

Candace's two paranormal romance series, The Chattanooga Supernaturals and The Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Club, are both sister series to the Only Human series, and give some secondary characters their happily ever after.

Her Safeword Series gives us characters who happen to have some extreme kinks. Relationships can be difficult enough without throwing power exchange into the mix, and her books show characters who care enough about each other to fight to make the relationship work. Each couple in the Safeword series gives the reader a different take on the lifestyle.

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?
I write with a mix of pants and plot. I know who my characters are — inside and out, current and past — before I start the book. When I begin the manuscript, I know how the story starts and how it ends, and I know their main challenges and conflicts… but everything else I find out as I write.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?
All the time, and I’ve found out the story is richer if I let them.

What is your favourite food?
Mint chocolate chip ice cream over a warm brownie. Alternatively, potatoes in almost any form. Too bad carbs are supposed to be the enemy.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Before becoming a parent I was a night owl. Now, I’m both a morning person and a night owl, which means I don’t sleep much.

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?
Out of all my world travels, I regret I haven’t yet made it to Machu Picchu.

Do distant places feature in your books?
Not yet. Eventually, Kirsten will travel to China and readers will experience the beauty of Guilin, the crowded cities and loud restaurants, the Star Ferry in Hong Kong, and so much more. For now, I hope I’m introducing them to some fun places in the South.

Do you listen to music while writing?
I listen to Classical music if I need to drown out the sounds of my family around me. Otherwise, I often work in silence. I can’t write to music with words — it’s too distracting.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?
Uncaged is the story of Ghost’s mom finally getting out of prison and finding her Happily Ever After. I had no idea I’d need to tell her story when I started Ghost’s book, but before I ended the first draft of the manuscript, I’d stopped long enough to plot the beginning and end of his mother’s book.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?
What I’ve learned could fill a book. Seriously.

My best quick answer would be to tell budding authors of the luxury they have when they write their first book, when there’s nothing else to do. I’m in the editing phrase for Unhuman Acts right now, but stopped to spend a day working on promo for the release of Uncaged. I’m also handling promo for Hallowed Destiny. Some weeks, eighty percent of my time is spent on the business of writing, and only twenty percent is actually spent writing. Other weeks, it’s seventy-five percent spent writing — but that’s as high as it ever gets, and those weeks are rare. Usually, it’s probably around half and half. So, if you’re writing your first novel, bask in the luxury of not having to do anything except write and edit, because once you’re published everything changes.

As with all jobs, there are always going to be parts you love and parts you’d rather not have to do. I love writing, but I’m not a fan of the editing process. I’m uncomfortable with most of the promo parts of the job, but I’ve learned to push past it and deal. I love interacting with readers, which surprised me because in general I’m not really a people person. Turns out, I’m a people person with book people, just not the general public.

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?
JRR Tolkien and Johnny Gruelle, because they brought fantasy alive to me as a young child. Johnny Gruelle created Raggedy Ann and Andy, and if you have young kids or grandkids, find one of the original books and read it to them. The series is pure magic. I was an avid reader at a young age, and I found Tolkien as soon as I went to middle school and had access to the library. I knew some trees were jealous of people and used their roots to trip us just because they could! It was like Tolkien and I shared this secret, and everyone else thought he’d just made it up — just as I’d known my dolls really came to life at night when I’d been younger.

I was hooked on fantasy by these two authors, and now I enjoy creating paranormal worlds that make people wonder if the guy in the grocery store buying all that beef is really a werewolf, and no one else knows.
