Book Spotlight: Loose Threads by J.O. Quantaman

Loose Threads: Cool Assassins 1
by J.O. Quantaman
Amazon

BLURB:

Alternate History, Literary Fiction.  About 400 pages, ten color pictures, 85 endnotes, glossary, appendix and list of characters.

"Loose Threads" doesn't fit in one genre or another.  It could be romance without an object, suspense on the installment plan, historical fiction for an era that's yet to happen.

More important, the narrative has memorable characters.  Nyssa, the orphan who finds a home.  Kazuo, the security chief who oversteps.  Shepp, the former smuggler who learns to play Big Brother.

Excerpt:

On wobbly legs she watches the taxi speed away.

Two carryalls dangle at her teeter-totter’s antipodes.  The duffel sways and twists her arm tendons to knots.  When she eases the stress on her elbow, the haversack strap tries to scribble off the opposite shoulder.  Rejigging her torso, she rebalances the totes and utters a subvocal curse for the cabby, though he doesn’t deserve it.

The cabby helped with the luggage and waited till she fastened the safety harness.  Once in the tunneled thoroughfare, he goosed the pedal and pancaked her to the backrest.  The taxi shot like a guided missile down foreshortened straightaways.  It rushed toward splayed forks where it swerved either left or right and climbed concave walls, as she corkscrewed sideways.  Her eyes grew to full moons.  Her tongue recounted each molar as if contact might calm her heart.  Trapped in the safety harness, she listened to the cabby’s affable gab, but his yarns didn’t ease her fright.

At least her heartbeats have calmed down and her stomach has caught up.  The loot from her shopping spree maybe cumbersome, but it’s worth every octal deducted from her smartcard.  Shoes, overalls, swimsuit, underwear, cosmetics, Pocky and toiletries cater to her tastes way better than handouts from logistics.

Nyssa stands on a pedestrian outskirt and gapes at the large hexagonal enclosure to which she has come.  Its length and breadth are nexus-sized, though its height from floor to ceiling spans but ten meters.  Structural columns sprout like weeds that block many sightlines to the far walls.  A banner on the central stairway hints at a parkland above.  Off to the side a wino sprawls in a heap.  He’s dead to the world, reeking of alcohol and snoring like a clogged bellows.  Paces away, there’s the sign for “Biped Trough” hanging above a down-turned stairwell.  She hears voices of merriment coming from below.  It’s hard to believe this is the right place.  Alcohol would make fools of acks in training for qat.

For two weeks she has played Japanese tourist and explored the urban colossus.  She has looked for Mr. Right, without much luck.  When she lured a gigolo for a cozy fling, she drew a blank.  The one guy who showed promise was Professor Jan, but he fell shy on the threshold.

Lifeways in Tsawwassen have been an eye-opener.  She has tangled with strange new customs, modest dress codes and informal markets that charge an arm & leg for high-quality goods.  The metics, she has to admit, seem content with their lot.  Whoever’s in charge must be doing something right.  There are no real downers except for the Public Eyes.

If Dog Breakfast lets her back, she’ll be safeguarding TCP, which she deems a worthy task.  She has friends in the dataroom and elsewhere in DB, including her qat mates.  Their feedback will be sorely missed if she’s cut loose.  Even a jerk like Rod has managed to push her in the right direction.

She admires Cook and the other rundogs.  On the upside of hope, she dares imagine a blackbelt around her waist.  That is if she can ever score more wins in the combat circle.  Yet her status in the co-op is anyone’s guess.  There’s no guarantee they’ll take her back, unless she scored the jackpot when she took down Fewer.

Biped Trough doesn’t look promising.  But there’s no other choice.  It all depends on who or what she finds inside.

Nyssa readjusts the haversack and lets the duffel swing free of her thigh.  She clomps down a darkish stairway and pauses at the entrance, then sallies into a large taproom with utility pipes across the ceiling and bare-bones décor.

The patrons sit around tables in knots of five or six.  Voices are interspersed with boisterous laughter.  Mugs are hoisted.  Tabletops resound with loud thumps.  Talkers wave arms at wide-eyed listeners.  Guys occupy most of the seats and outnumber the gals six to one.  Women are all ears, posing Mona Lisa smiles and come-hither eyes, save for one who’s red-hot angry and is spouting words in an alien tongue.  Both genders have coarse-black hair gathered in braided ponytails.  Aboriginals from the outback, she gathers.

Nobody pays her much notice as she weaves around tables, her luggage in tow.  There are no familiar faces at the tables.  Then a man in a plaid woolen shirt rises up and marches straight on like a runaway train, his eyes glazed in tunnel vision.  At the last instant, Nyssa forsakes her duffel and leaps clear of his path.

“Henry!” shouts the bartender who wears a lopsided chef’s hat.  “You darn-near overran a guest.  Wake up and use your eyes, or you’re outta here.”

The room grows quiet.  The gabble pauses as patrons ogle the bartender.  Henry stops in his tracks and shrugs.  “More careful I go.”

The bartender nods as if expecting no less.  After a moment the talkfest resumes with less gusto.  Nyssa picks up her duffel and takes a closer look at the bartender.

It’s rundog Cook!

Author Interview & Giveaway: Near the Wild by Maureen Willett

About the Author:

Maureen Willett is a writer of fiction that pushes the boundaries of established genres.  Her stories mostly come from her own family legends that have been passed down through generations, but then she tops them off with a twist of faery dust and angel wings.

But at the core of each story are great characters in very human conflicts that anyone will find compelling.  Each novel is crafted as an experience that will take readers beyond their day-to-day lives, incorporating themes of time travel, reincarnation, and magic.

She lives in Hawaii and finds its ethereal beauty a source of inspiration for her writing.  She is a former journalist, public relations professional, and media marketing specialist.  Writing fiction has been her passion since grade school.

Book Description:

Cowboys and leprechauns both occupy Maeve MacKeighry's world in 1870, and she must decide which will win her heart. Leprechauns are feared, even in Ireland, but that doesn't prevent Maeve from striking up a friendship with one who lives near her village. But once Maeve becomes a young woman, the local villagers start to gossip, especially since the MacKeighrys are known to practice magic in their home. It's just for entertainment, but the town folk don't see it that way. Rather than be outcasts, the MacKeighrys set off to America to homestead in Kansas, vowing to leave their magical ways and friends behind. Little do they know that Maeve's friend follows and protects them on their journey.

The MacKeighrys encounter many adventures along the way to Kansas, only to find a simple sod house on their new farm at the end of the journey. The untamed land offers a fresh start for the family, as well as two very interesting men who both compete for Maeve’s attention. Pretty young women in a wild western town are a rarity. But can she forget her magical friend, and turn her attention to two of the most interesting men she has ever met? Perhaps cowboys and outlaws have a certain charm that a leprechaun doesn't, after all.

Most of the novel takes place in Kansas in 1870 and is based on the author’s family history. The idea of the MacKeighry’s sod house came from the home of Willett’s great grandfather. She was lucky enough to visit it as a teenager before the house was destroyed. One of the characters, Nikki Fuerst, is based on an ancestor, a prince from Austria who was disinherited for marrying a commoner and sent off to America. Stories Willett has been told her entire life about her family’s history and traditions, such as levitating tables, are included in Near The Wild.

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

I let the story flow, and I’m always surprised by my characters. They grow and develop before my eyes and create a story I hadn’t planned at all. Most of the time, I set out to write a certain story, but by the time I’ve finished the first draft, it’s something else entirely. That’s what makes writing so much fun.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

Constantly! It becomes quite annoying. I revise, revise, revise. I have to go back and put in all the missing elements the characters wouldn’t let me write about. They’re usually greedy for page time and don’t let me devote space to anything descriptive in the first draft.

What is your favourite food?

Because it’s the beginning of the year, I’m on a green drink kick right now to get all the toxins out. Most of the year, it’s barbecued filet mignon with a crisp green salad. I live in Hawaii, so we can cook outdoors year round.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Definitely a night owl, but my son’s school schedule forces me to be a morning person. I’d like to say I get up an hour early to write every morning, but I just don’t feel very creative at the crack of dawn.

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?

My dream is to visit Ireland. I’m half Irish and have heard so many stories about how beautiful it is, so I feel I must experience it myself. My novel Near The Wild helped to fulfil part of this fantasy for me.

Do distant places feature in your books?

Sometimes. But more often, distant times or alternate realities take hold of my stories. I live in Hawaii and have written a novel set here, The Soul Stealer. Those dreaming of traveling to Hawaii someday might find it appealing.

Do you listen to music while writing?

Never. I need quiet when I write.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

Near The Wild is a blend of paranormal romance and a wild west adventure. It’s taken from many of the stories of my ancestors I heard growing up as a kid—family legends. My family also has a history of practicing magic, so I’ve incorporated that into the story as well.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

You must write in order to be a good writer. It’s a craft that takes time and practice to conquer. With each novel, I become a better storyteller and learn so much about my craft.  It’s an endless journey that I hope to enjoy the rest of my life. Publishing? It can be quite discouraging as a novice author to try to get traditionally published. I felt like I was beating my head against a brick wall for many years. I’m happy that the industry is changing with online technology and there are more open doors for authors these days.

Is there anything you would do differently?

Yes, I’d believe in myself as a writer at an earlier stage of my life.

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?

Since grade school I’ve been an avid reader. My genres have occasionally switched over the years, so many types of authors have influenced me. I also love to watch movies, and often get inspiration there.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

Keep writing no matter what the odds. Take classes in creative writing as much as possible, and join online critique groups. Listen to the bad reviews, as well as the good, because both can help you improve as a writer.

What are three words that describe you?

Smart, creative, independent.

What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?

I have many, but one of my lasting favorites is Diana Gabaldon. I love the Outlander series.

Author Interview & Giveaway: The Power of Tess by Angelina J. Windsor

About the Author:

If, to quote Robert Louis Stevenson, to forget oneself is to be happy, than Angelina J. Windsor is most happy when she is immersed in the lives of my characters. Writing is all about giving your heart and soul to your storytelling. Obsessed with ideas and writing since she was one of those, the dreaded teenage poet, she spends time every day bringing worlds to life. For that journey she is humbled and grateful.

She writes in multiple genres (multi-published) across the writing spectrum, from hard science fiction to sweet romance, though she is quite drawn to racy characters that have plenty of attitude to spare.  She can only hope her books touch your life albeit briefly in our busy world, and give you moments of absolute freedom as you fly with her to other worlds. Thanks for reading! And may all your stories have a happy-ever-after.

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

Hello, and thanks for having me here with you today!

I’ve done it both ways. My first books I just let the characters fly and take over. Then, I discovered sometimes they led me down a blind alley and I had to help them out, losing thousands of words in the process. Now, I tend to make sure my idea is sound by taking the time to write out the important plot points while I am seeing the characters come to life in my mind. It’s definitely a balancing act.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

Sure, and sometimes that works great, and sometimes they get out of hand!

What is your favourite food?

Protein. I seem to need a lot of it to keep my blood sugar even.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

More morning, though I have been both. I write 7 days a week, mornings for sure, and then depending on my schedule, I will get back to it soon as all my other tasks are done.

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?

I travel so much in my stories that I feel no real urge to travel.

Do distant places feature in your books?

Definitely. I love, love research. I travel to all sorts of places due to the magic of the internet.

Do you listen to music while writing?

Never. I need absolute quiet to hear my characters.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

Ah, The Power of Tess, is quite special to me. It is the first book picked up by a publishing company I have been dreaming of writing for all my life: Ellora’s Cave Publishing. The story is about a college age girl who needs a huge amount of money ASAP. To get it she will have to bend her strong Southern morals to the point she will offer her virginity to the highest bidder in an auction. She grows up during the story while discovering her own inner power.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

Gosh, enough to fill a book I think. The industry is in flux, constantly shifting and changing. Fascinating time to be a writer with so many options at your disposal.

Is there anything you would do differently?

Not really, I have tried to have good dealings with everyone taking to heart my grandmother’s words, “If you can’t say something good about someone, don’t say anything at all!”

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?

I read a lot and have done all my life. Everyday, in fact, and lots on how to improve your writing as well. It’s very important to read. I can’t stress that enough.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

Write, read, dream. It’s all good. And believe in yourself.

What are three words that describe you?

Strong, focused, intelligent. (When I need a mantra to feel good about myself after stress, I repeat over and over, “Strong and Beautiful”.)

What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?

So many, the list is endless and still growing.

Author Interview: Juli D. Revezzo

About the Author:

Juli D. Revezzo loves fantasy and Celtic mythology and writing stories with all kinds of fantastical elements. She is the author of The Antique Magic series and the Paranormal Romance Celtic Stewards Chronicles series, New Adult romance Changeling’s Crown, and many short stories. She is also a member of the Independent Author Network and the Magic Appreciation Tour.

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

Hi, Annette, thanks for having me. Let’s see…. I plan my stories a little, but I like to let them do what it will. If I plan too much, the writing seems to stop.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

All the time! :)

What is your favourite food?

I’m like Garfield. I love lasagna, all Italian food, really, but lasagna’s a favorite. :)

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

I’m more of a night owl, these days. I seem to do my best writing after, at least, 2pm.

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?

Ireland. I’ve always wanted to see the Emerald Isle. I’d love to see the landscape that ties into my books (Druid Warrior’s Heart specifically) firsthand.  - go, it's beautiful, but I may be biased ;)

Do distant places feature in your books?

Yes. The heroine of Druid Warrior’s Heart owns/is keeper of a battleground sacred to the gods, in a small area of Ireland. (They later move to Florida, but that’s a different era and book :)) I know I couldn’t go see what her area looked like in the 16th century, when Druid Warrior's Heart takes place, but still, I'd love to visit the island.

Do you listen to music while writing?

It depends. While I’m writing the first draft, yes, for the most part. When I’m editing, I find I can’t.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

Druid Warrior’s Heart continues my Celtic Stewards Chronicles fantasy romance series. The series follows a family, and Druid Warrior’s Heart specifically, goes back to the next generation. The steward this time, Ruth Macken, lives in Ireland in the 16th century. She knows—or rather, has been taught—that a group of mythic, sacred warriors from the Tuatha dé Danann will arrive one day, and ask to use her land to stage yet another round of battles against their evil foe Balor who intends to destroy the Earth, and all Ruth has come to know and love. With them will come a guardian who will protect her from Balor’s nefarious plots, and with whom she’ll fall in love. 

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

A whole lot! It’s easier—and harder—to do things myself. Promotion sometimes takes up as much time as writing (or more!). Plus, I know my writing has improved, from where I started out all those years ago.

Is there anything you would do differently?

I would say, I’d probably start seeking publication earlier than I did, but then again? It might’ve been good that I waited until after high school to begin sending stuff out. Who knows?

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?

A fantasy author named Michael Moorcock influenced me in my early days. Also, especially for Druid Warrior’s Heart, the medieval authors. I can also point to several indie authors, some who are friends who keep my stubbornness plugging along.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

Read widely. Keep learning, keep trying, and if you believe in your work enough, don’t let anything stop you.

What are three words that describe you?

Tenacious, creative, dreamer.

What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?

As I said above, my favorite writer is Michael Moorcock. I also have enjoyed H.P. Lovecraft, Laurell K. Hamilton, Robert Silverberg, Melanie Rawn, Jolene Dawe, Suzanne G. Rogers, Elizabeth Moon., Virginia Woolf. The list is endless… Same thing with books.  There are just too many to list, but I am currently enjoying The Lunatic Café by Laurell K. Hamilton, and The Mannequin, an historical romance by Suzanne G. Rogers.

Blurb of your latest release or coming soon book.

The blurb for Druid Warrior’s Heart is as follows:

As the latest in her family’s long line of stewards, Ruth Macken awaits the arrival of a warrior sworn to the Tuatha dé Danaan, the Celtic gods her family has served since the beginning of time. For on that day, a magical battle will erupt. A war between druids and an evil that will decide the fate of mankind.

Isaac Connel knows the battle is imminent, and is ready to fight, once again but from the moment he sees Ruth flitting around the sacred ground, he’s captivated by her fiery charms and a need to protect her.

Despite Isaac’s assurances and the dreams that guide her, what can Ruth and her lover do to drive off this evil? Despite everything, will the world end at the hands of an evil god?

As I said, Druid Warrior’s Heart is the second title in my Celtic Stewards Chronicles. The preceding title is Passion’s Sacred Dance. I also have a paranormal series entitled Antique Magic. That series comprises, currently, three titles: The Artist’s Inheritance, Caitlin’s Book of Shadows, and Drawing Down the Shades, about a witch in North Florida who works with the Welsh gods, and helps ghosts along their way. I also have a new adult fantasy romance called Changeling’s Crown, (about a mixed up faery godmother), a Christmas themed PNR mystery called Murder Upon a Midnight Clear. I also have a zombie themed-novelette, Bicycle Requiem, and a couple Gothic short stories available: House of Cards and Sing A Mournful Melody. So, quite a few for your readers to choose from.

In a future ravaged by greed and war, The Domicile has emerged. A new civilization governed by clandestine Elders where citizens are united by white masks and uniform identities. Whispers spread about the unconventional lessons she teaches her new students. Excerpt:

I heard his screams first.

My eyes welled with tears as I ran as fast as I could. I’d never heard him scream before, but I knew it was him. I’d recognize his voice anywhere.

I found him in in one of corridors. There – body bent over, back exposed to the whip that licked at his skin with each swing, hissing as it sliced through the air and carved his back. Blood seeped through the torn black cloth that once fully covered him.

His punisher stood over him, an expressionless enforcer methodically wielding the whip.

“Stop! I’ll take half his punishment! Please, stop!” Tears spilled from my eyes and I rushed forward, trying to beat the next stream of blood oozing from his back.

But a pair of strong arms ripped me away, grabbing me and lifting me off the floor.

“Get off me!” I demanded. “I’ll take half his punishment!” I punched my captor’s chest with my fists, feebly attempting to free myself, but his hold didn’t budge.

“You do not beg for mercy for a betrayer of the Elders and the Domicile!” the man growled at me as he carried me back the way I had come. My body shook at his lies. The bleeding boy was not a betrayer of the Domicile! He hated the Domicile as much as me, but he wasn’t a betrayer.

Or, maybe he was. And maybe I was too, I realized as I continued the fight to save my best friend. Our betrayal was in the hatred we harbored for the Domicile. The Common Law we broke repeatedly. The rules we defied, resulting in horrible beatings like this one. But I didn’t care. The Elders sought to trap us, brainwash us, make us live in blind obedience. And on the rest of them, it had worked. But I refused to submit.

I vehemently stared at the guard. We may be the betrayers of the Domicile, but the Elders were the oppressors of humanity.

I hated them, and I was going to stop them.

Author Bio

Courtney’s love for writing started pretty much when she learned to read, which her mother would tell you was a feat in itself back when she was in the first grade. Once she aced those flashcards with vocabulary words, Courtney’s writing took off.  And her love with it.  In school, she was always writing short stories on a word processor (What?? Word processor with floppy disks?). Oh yes, she literally had a card filing case full of floppy disks.

Now getting her Doctorate in social work, she’s used this education to help her writing some of the gritty issues entwined in her stories. When Courtney isn’t writing her next book while drinking coffee, you can find her doing homework (drag) with chocolate chip flavored coffee, reading series of books (because school books are only so interesting) while drinking pumpkin flavored coffee, playing with her little boy, or daydreaming of future beach houses while drinking some other scrumptious flavor of coffee.

Things You Didn't Expect When You Started Writing Your Book

*How many times I would have to reread my work.

*I did not realise I could not use brand names in the story without prior permission.

*How many hours are involved from start to book launch.

*The amount of mistakes you miss no matter how many times you go over it.

*That when you write the end in the book you are nowhere near finished.

About the Book
Title: Blood Gold Revenge
Author: Dave Wright
Genre: Thriller

“A lot of things have happened up this way over the years. There’s got to be at least six missing person’s that I have heard of.”

There is gold in the vastness of the Australian outback, and a special breed of men who prospect for it. Tim is bush-hardened and skilled; the love for this harsh country comes naturally. His prospecting partner John shares Tim’s love of the freedom, but times have changed. A new breed of prospector has reason to appreciate the desolate isolation of the bush — but it is not gold he is after. The country’s biggest meth lab is doing well, and its owner, Mr C. does not appreciate passers-by.

The cattle on the Hatchet River Station homestead have not been mustered for the past ten years. The brutish Maxine, her husband Scrubber, and her brother Price have agreed to run interference for Mr C.; after all, they have always enjoyed killing the odd lone prospector when they had the chance.

But they make a mistake, and the solitary prospector they pick off one day was not alone as they thought. There are witnesses to the crime this time, and they want justice for their friend. Tired of the Hatchet River trio’s murdering ways, intimidation and threats, and suspecting local police corruption, Tim, Jack and Sam call in the state authorities.

A massive search begins; the hunters become the hunted, the innocent pay for the crimes of the guilty and the good guys don’t always win. But the net does tighten. The well-camouflaged drug lab explode in flames and the blood of many, good and bad, soak into the parched land in a spectacular finale. It is not the authorities who bring justice to Hatchet River, however, but a band of indomitable bushies, who have never learned to say die.

About the Book

the-bully-and-emily-dickinson-by-dennis-fishelTitle: Russell’s Revenge
Author: Dennis Fishel
Genre: YA Humor, Adventure

Fate has been messing up Dennis’s life for as long as he can remember. It was Fate that decided Russell Folmer—the biggest, ugliest, and meanest kid on earth—would live only two houses south of Dennis’s. Fate was also responsible for making Russell the same age and placing him in the same school. So who else but malicious Fate would arrange for Russell to be in the wrong place at exactly the wrong time when the bombs crafted from the only product a dog manufactures fell from Dennis’s experimental kite?

Now, with dog dumplings decorating Russell’s extremely large and angry face, it looks as though Dennis’s days of successfully dodging the well-known bully are over. As the sound of Russell’s pounding feet gets ever closer, two questions flare up in Dennis’s panicked mind like neon in the blackness of a cave: What has he done to make Fate hate him so much, and how is he going to get out of this fix?

Author Bio

Owned and managed by dogs for most of his life, Dennis shares a home on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula with his four-legged boss, Sally. Together they pursue their interests in wooden boats, fly fishing, chasing down obscure historic sites, and hiking to remote places just for the fun of it.

Book Review: Ravenhearth by Lotus Oakes

Ravenhearth
by Lotus Oakes
Less Than Three Press
M/M Romance/Fantasy
4 Stars

Blurb:

In a world covered by a deadly miasma, humans survive by way of the protection of powerful mages known as Keepers. In the town of Ravenhearth, the Keeper requests a companion every ten years. What happens to them after those ten years, no one knows, for none has ever returned.

Ash is a young orphan who dreams of learning magic. When the newest request for a companion is posted, he volunteers. Upon his arrival, he finds the Keeper's home is nothing like the fearful whispers shared around the village. Instead, he slowly grows to become part of the close-knit family of the Keeper's castle—and falling for Giles, the butler of Ravenhearth, rather than the mage he's been sent there to attend.

Review:

Orphaned and homeless, Ash ekes out a living doing odd jobs around the town of Ravenhearth for a pittance in coins and scraps of food. His clothes are ragged and worn and the rest of the townfolk give him a wide berth, for they always felt there was something strange about him.

Like all inhabited towns, Ravenhearth is protected by a Keeper, who lives in a castle not far from the town. Every ten years the Keeper sends a letter asking for a companion from the village. Ash is old enough to remember the last letter and the sting of magic from it. His mother had been a mage, not as powerful as a Keeper and Ash too wishes to learn magic.

And maybe, if he volunteers this time, then the Keeper might be able to teach him. And leaving the town where his mother died would certainly be no hardship, it's not as if he'd be leaving lots of friends behind. And so begins Ash's adventure in the castle of the Keeper.

The book had a little bit of a fairy tale feel to it, and reminded me a little of the Cinderella story, although this one was a gay story.

Ash is the point of view character for the whole book and while that helped you get into Ash's head, you only reall got to know the other character's through Ashs's eyes. It has excellent characterisation, even some you love to hate. I couldn't stand the twins, Whitney and Courtney. They came across as petulant, whining brats, although they were adults and older than Ash. Lilah and Verity became surrogate mothers of a sort to Ash and it was good to see him let go of some of the grief he was still carrying around after his own mother's death.

Romance between Ash and Giles is slow to take off, it's mainly one-sided for most of the book, with Giles not even being aware that Ash has fallen in love with him. When they do get together, you feel like them cheering them on, finally!

The book was about 60,000 words and unusually for a book of that length, there weren't really any chapters, just scene breaks. Chapters would have helped it flow more easily.

There were some questions I would have loved to have been answered in the book, but they weren't. What was this strange fog? Why was it toxic to humans? Was it some sort of industrial accident? A magic experiment gone wrong? We don't find out. The author gave a tantaslising taste of world-building but not enough. I wanted to know more about Ash's world, more about how magic worked here but we barely see any magic at all. Mostly Ash reading about it and doing meditation to clear his mind.

So, although I had some problems with the world-building, the story itself is good, well-written and populated with interesting characters. There are a couple of explitict scenes, but I'd say this romance falls more on the sweet side, with a lot of tension and build-up between our two main characters.

If you want a romantic read that's light on the angst, give this one a try.

About the Book

Henchgirl Cover Choice 1Title: Henchgirl
Author: Rita Stradling
Genre: YA Urban Fantasy

I had never thought my life was ideal, but it had been manageable.

By day I pretended to be a human, going to a ‘human’s only’ high-school, making human friends and trying to get the attention of Keanu Hale, my school’s quarterback. At night, I worked as a henchman, making sure no one got in the way of my grandfather’s hotel-empire which spanned across the Mabiian island chain. I was my grandfather’s most cherished weapon, I stole and manipulated emotions, I would even drain someone of their ability to feel joy if my grandfather ordered me to.

I won’t apologize for what I did, it kept my sisters fed and my grandfather from finding out that my mother squandered our monthly allowance on shopping and throwing extravagant parties. It kept my family alive. But more importantly, my job kept me from being trained to be a wife and married off to some rich and powerful dracon, a human-dragon hybrid, as all girls with one-eighth dragon blood are.

As I said, my life was just manageable, until Wyvern Manderson vacationed to my island. Wyvern Manderson, the rich, powerful, and famous for something or other, half-dragon jerk, just kept showing up, sabotaging my missions and ordering me around. On top of that, for some reason he was always angry at me.

Pretty soon I was suspended from further missions, facing eminent financial ruin and still had to see the jerk everywhere I went. When my friend Amanda from my human-high-school vanished, Amanda turned out to be Wyvern’s human half-sister he was keeping secret and protecting.

Taking on the mission to find Amanda might have been what I needed to save my family from losing everything, but to do it I would have to spend all day everyday with the jerk. To top that all off, Amanda was not the only girl who disappeared, and when girls started being discovered dead I realized that my sanity wasn’t the biggest thing I would be risking in this investigation; I might very well be the next to die.

Author Interview: W.E. Lawrence

About the Author:

W. E. Lawrence graduated in 1978 from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill with a BS in business administration. He has run a successful home health care supplies distributorship for the past twenty-three years.

Passionate about God, writing, reading, family, sports, politics, and America, Lawrence currently lives in Davidson, North Carolina, with his lovely wife and their two wonderful children.

W. E. Lawrence enjoys writing historical romance novels filled with action, adventure, and suspense. He published his debut novel Guardian of Paradise in October 2014.  To learn more, go to http://welawrenceauthor.wix.com/author

Q.  Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

A.  Actually, I’ve tried it both ways, but I feel that you need a least some sort of outline to follow, either in your head or written down.  Before I started my first project I read a couple of good instructional books on novel plotting which recommended  outlining the entire book using “section sheets” to make certain you hit your “target” word count and your story didn’t run out of steam halfway into the tale.  It worked out well and I found this was good advise, especially for a new writer.  In my second project I wrote from a general outline in my head and I ended coming up short of my intended length.  It worked out all right though as I went back and added scenes which made it a better story.

Q.  Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

A.  I’ve heard of this happening with other writers but it seems kind of silly to me.  Perhaps it’s simply because I’m a fairly new author and it just hasn’t happen yet.  The characters, as well as the plot, are the product of the writer’s imagination and it only makes sinse that they follow that plot.  I will admit though, that sometimes when I’m imaging a scene with dialog between characters, I feel like I’m dictating the conversation instead of forcing it.

Q.  What is your favourite food?

A.  I enjoy far too many to have a favorite.  I like Italian, Chinese, Mexican, all kinds of seafood, a good steak, barbeque, and it’s hard to beat a grilled burger or hot dog.

They say variety is the spice of life, don’t they?

Q.  Are you a morning person or a night owl?

A.  I used to be a night owl but I’m afraid I’ve grown to old for that nonsense now.

Q.  Do distant places feature in your books?

A.  Absolutely, my first book is set on a ficticinal South Pacific Island, and the second book takes place among ancient ruins in Southern Peru.

Q.  Do you listen to music while writing?

A.  No, I find it distracting; too difficult to concentrate.

Q.  Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

A. My latest novel, Chakana, was released in December 2015. It is a historical romance novel filled with action, adventure, suspense, and intrigue. Reviewers have compared it to Indiana Jones.

Here’s the synopsis:

In 1940, James Fleming, the original British secret agent, races on a high-stakes mission to track down the lost Incan treasure of King Huascar.  He meats Kate Rhodes, a policewoman on leave from Ohio, and together they decode clues and face the challenges of the Chakana designed to allow only the most devoted to escape alive.

Among the ancient ruins of Peru, disaster hides around each corner.  They battle Incan death traps and an international artifact smuggler who will do anything to acquire the hidden wealth.  If James and Kate fail, the Nazi’s Third Reich could win WWII and take over the world.  There’s intrigue, danger, adventure, and even romance in their quest to save the free world.

Q.  What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

A.  Almost everything: from the beginning “Hook” to the climax and Wrap-up.  I’ve learned about point of view (POV) and there there should only be one per scene.  I’ve learned to have surprises throughout the story to maintain interest.  It has and will continue to be an ongoing process.

Q.  Is there anything you would do differently?

A.  Only that I would have started much sooner.

Q.  Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?

A.  Reading, Movies, and Television

Q.  Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

A.  Don’t do it for fame and fortune.  You’ll only end up frustrated and disappointed.  Do it because it’s what you enjoy doing.

Q.  What are three words that describe you?

A.  Driven / Literate / Immature

Author Interview: Vanessa Bogenholm

About the Author

Vanessa Bogenholm lives in Los Gatos, California with her three dogs, and teaches tennis. She has been writing Romance/Women’s Fiction, reviews and short stories for numerous websites and magazines for years. Her debut novel – The Moral Line – was published in March 2014 by AuthorHouse.

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

I usually start with an idea, then it flows in directions that sometimes when I reread don’t make sense in the moment.  Kind of like my personal life, nothing ever goes quite like I planned.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Oh such a morning person, I get up at 5 am everyday.  Sleep is the most important thing to me. I need my 8-9 hours and am very diligent about getting that in so usually in bed by 9 pm.  Any wonder why I am single?

Do you listen to music while writing?

Oh yes, and I had to present a folk singer, John Gorka, with a copy of my book when it was finished because his sad loss of love songs were always going on in the background.  I gave him a copy at a concert, he was touched.  It was always sad music, like Carol King, or old country music like Marty Robbins.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

The Moral Line is a story about lonliness and the way we as humans try to deal with it.  I have been fascinated by escorts and the business of prostitution most of my life and created a character, along with the men that are her clients, that were not just there for the pleasure of sex, but real people trying to fill a void.

Blurb:

The Moral Line opens readers’ eyes to the world of high-end escorts and the men who frequent them.

After being rejected and left alone, Alexandria, finds herself going down a moral line. Slightly desperate for money, she takes a one-time ‘job’ as a paid for companion by a not so attractive but very nice wealthy man. Is getting paid to be in the company of men really such a bad thing if it feels good? She falls into a world of clients that are wealthy, powerful, successful men with fancy cars and country club lifestyles. But she sees the fragility in all of these men, the loneliness and need for acceptance that is the human condition.

Alexandria becomes ‘Catherine’, a high-end escort with a beautiful laugh who finds the goodness and attractiveness in all men, falling in love with all of her clients just a little. By accepting these men and seeing the goodness in them, she pleases these men in many ways. Is it possible by pleasing others maybe Alexandria can find her true self and find happiness?

The Moral Line is available in eBook, paperback, and hardback formats from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, AuthorHouse, and many other websites.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

That I know nothing!!! 10 or so years ago I would go to book store, go to the new release table, read the backs of books and pick 10 or so out to last me a month or so.  I would spend $150.

Now none of us go to bookstores, we read on devices, millions of titles are out there.  We can get books for free, so we don’t care if we ever even really read them or they cost $3 and so we don’t like them, we don’t finish them. I really have no idea how any book except from major authors gets traction.  I knew nothing about self-publishing and tried to do my best, but could have done better.

Is there anything you would do differently?

I would have done almost everything differently!! I would have waited and hired a publicist before I published, would have spent more time and money on the editor, would have really not let the publishing house push me into getting the product out there, then I think it would have been better.

What are three words that describe you?

Competitive, compassionate, and diligent.

What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?

Jean Paul Sartre, I have a copy of Nausea that I have reread 100s of times and actually has my annotations from when I was a teenager.  I am fascinated by human emotion and in my opinion, he captures it so fully.

Excerpt:

Chapter 1

A lightning bolt sheared past Reese into the smoke-filled night sky and left an acrid stench in its wake. Streaks of fire and blue-white fingers of electricity flared so bright he could barely focus. He wasn’t getting out of this. Not this battle, or this life, with any modicum of honor.

Darting through the air, he dodged another electrical strike.

An elite flashed into view and swung wide, his bloodied dagger aimed at Reese’s gut.

Reese barrel-rolled up and over his attacker, wrapped him in a chokehold, and masked their presence from the rest of the fighters. Praise the Great One, he should be fighting beside this warrior, not against him.

The warrior flailed and tried to break free, the lack of footing giving him zero leverage. He slumped, unconscious, into Reese’s ready hold seconds later.

He lowered them both to the tree line at the battle’s edge, out of site from the rebels. The man couldn’t be more than twenty years outside his awakening. Probably barely into his elite torc and cuffs. Beneath Reese’s fingers, the man’s pulse thrummed slow, but steady. At least this innocent’s death wouldn’t be on his conscience.

A twenty-five-foot wall of flame exploded across the open field and rattled the air and earth around them. The bright flare faded under heavy night, and more rebellion warriors thunked to the mottled field.

The sharp rustle of leaves against the forest floor sounded down the tree line, one quick shift and then silence.

Reese backed deeper into the foliage and strengthened the mask that kept him hidden. It couldn’t be a rebellion man. All those were engaged against the malran’s warriors. Focusing his thoughts, he sought the soulless black thread that represented the link he’d grudgingly created with Maxis Steysis, and traced his location.

No, not the rebellion leader either. His energy showed more than ten miles to the east, well away from the fight. Reese levitated off the forest floor and floated through the trees. Gnarled and leafless branches scraped his cheek and shoulders. Darkness enveloped him, broken only by the bright attacks where the forest opened to the battle beyond.

There. Not five feet from the tree line, a figure knelt facing the battle.

He drifted closer. The sweet, damp scent of soil and decomposing leaves overpowered the metallic residue of electrical strikes floating on the wind. Grunts, shouts, and the too-frequent thuds of perished men sounded in a haphazard pattern.

A flash spotlighted long, auburn hair. A woman. Bowed over a body, she cradled a fallen companion’s head in her lap.

Reese angled to better see her and nearly faltered in holding his mask. His heart kicked in an awkward rhythm and reality faded to nothingness. Galena Shantos, sister to the malran. The last person he wanted to witness his disgrace.

Seventy years since he’d seen her this close. Her elegant features were still as staggering as the days when he’d trained to serve the malran, but there was more to her now. A confidence in the way she protected her charge and watched the battle. Knowledge behind her tropical blue-green eyes that spoke of experience and age.

And he fought alongside the men who battled her brother.

Galena flinched at another blast and hugged the limp body she cradled tight. As the light dimmed, she uncurled from her burden.

Another woman, her long blond hair stark against Galena’s black tunic and leggings, and her sightless eyes aimed at the heavens.

No. Surely not. Reese crept closer, pressure building at his temples. The zings and thunder of battle rumbled louder, and his gut clenched.

Phybe. She’d been alive when Reese left her, tucked away in a zeolite mine where Maxis couldn’t trace her link. He touched down in the thick carpet of leaves at Galena’s right and dropped his mask. “I failed her.”

Galena jerked and reached for something beneath one leg. “Who are you?”

Smudges marked Phybe’s ashen face, her blue gown torn and satin slippers stained. Somehow Maxis had found her and finished the job he’d sent Reese to do. “He’ll kill me for trying to save her.”

More strikes burst through the thick residual smoke, the malran’s fighters airborne and casting one attack after another. Fewer than twenty rebellion men still lived, half retreating north.

“A cause that fights without honor isn’t worth fighting, is it?” he said.

Galena straightened and squared her shoulders. “I’d have a hard time counting on honor from any man who fights with Maxis.”

“You’re right. I gave that up the moment I agreed to his schemes.” He crouched beside them.

Galena tensed and tightened her grip on whatever she hid beneath her leg.

Reese palmed Phybe’s forehead, cool and lifeless. May your journey be swift and your spirit find peace with The Great One. The same Myren prayer he’d offered his mother when she’d drawn her last breath. He stepped back. Maybe it was time to find his own peace. On his own terms. “You don’t remember me do you?”

She shook her head. A terse, barely-there jerk as she eased from beneath her dead charge, crouched on the balls of her feet and coiled for escape.

“My name is Reese Theron.”

She froze, flashes of light from the battle winking off the edge of her blade. She assessed him head to toe, no spark of recognition.

Maybe if he’d been braver all those years ago, he’d have had a chance with her. Or broken his vow and killed Maxis himself when he’d had the chance. He shook the memories off. He’d taken the wrong path and now it was time to pay. “Call your guards. Make sure they know you’re in danger.”

A gunshot rattled the skies and a woman’s blood-curdling scream sounded across the battlefield.

Galena lurched to a stand and then stopped, zigzagging her attention between the shouts along the battlefield and Phybe’s body.

Now was his chance. Either he took the brave farewell, or he’d die by Maxis’ hands. “Your face is a good one to remember. Go with The Great One, Galena.” He shot to the sky and built a violent ball of energy in his palm, sharp tendrils darting from its center. Drawing back, he aimed the bogus attack at Galena. Surely The Great One would understand.

An elite guard spun from across the skies and drew back for counter- attack.

Reese braced for impact.

A streak of auburn flashed below him. Galena, spearing through the air, her trajectory centered between the elite and Reese.

The energy in his palm fizzled. Not her. Not Galena.

Lightning fired from the elite’s palm, sheered past Galena’s cheek, and pierced his shoulder. He jerked and spasmed, locked in place by the force of the strike. Blue-black spots dotted his vision and his lungs seized.

A woman’s scream ripped through the air.

Wind whipped around him, dead weight as he fell, and darkness took  over.
