Excerpt:

G is for Glass by Gary B. Phillips:

Adina was born a girl of glass.

She had not been the first child with such a strange birth defect. The doctors had run tests on the child after her birth and delivered the news with practiced, solemn faces. Her mother carefully pulled back layer after layer of blankets to reveal a small translucent blue body, spindling arms and legs, and clear blue eyes that shone like the sky after a February storm.

...

She watched the children across the field kicking a soccer ball. One of them tripped and came back up with a bloody knee and grass in his hair. He was smiling though. She could smell the wet grass, hear the sound of their laughter. She wanted so badly to taste it.

She envied other children, hated them even, as they skipped up and down the stairs, two-at-a-time, even three. Jumping the last half dozen stairs and falling at the bottom, their voices howling with laughter and pain. Broken arms, scraped legs, and bloody noses.

“You look angry,” Shamira said.

Adina’s felt flush in her cheeks. She wondered if they were tinting red.

“I want that,” Adina said, and she pointed to the children playing.

“I know, but that’s where you got that.” Shamira pointed to the chipped glass of her elbow. “And this.” Her fingers brushed against Adina’s brow, where the sliver of missing glass was almost invisible to the naked eye if you weren’t looking for it.

“Some lives come with a higher cost. That’s why I’m here. To help you.”

That was the thing about Shamira. She never made it sound as if she was being paid to be there. She always gave her answers as a friend.

Even at six Adina knew her life was fake. She had been made in some strange, fake way and existed in a state somewhere between liquid and solid, always in suspended animation, never able to reach any point for herself.

She had heard rumors about other children of failed experiments. Most of them were thrown away. Those that were not formed small communities, under bridges, tent cities, at the edges of civilization. The children in her neighborhood traded stories about them, whispered words on fall winds. Freak. Monster. Alien. She wondered if there was another glass child. A glass boy, perhaps.

Guest Post & Giveaway: In the Beginning There Was Us by Ingrid Jonach

Guest Post
Why I love writing sci-fi YA
by Ingrid Jonach

I love writing for young adults—mainly because I like reading young adult novels, so I guess I feel like I'm writing for myself. And, even though I’m now well beyond the traditional age bracket, my favourite contemporary author remains Sarah Dessen (who has just released her twelfth novel Saint Anything. Yay!).

When I was writing books for kids, I used to get asked all the time whether I had kids myself. I somewhat sheepishly replied, ‘No,’ as if this somehow disqualified me from being able to entertain and educate that age group. After all, I was a kid once myself.

And that’s exactly how I look at my obsession with young adult novels. I was—not too long ago—a teenager and it left an indelible mark on me. I think what really appeals to me about writing for young adults is that you’re exploring the transition to adulthood, which gives you some really heavy themes like the loss of innocence and search for identity, coupled with characters who vary vastly in maturity.

I’ve always been a big fan of fantasy—more so than science fiction. The books I adored growing up were mostly supernatural (for example, anything by Australian author Victor Kelleher). I particularly adored the horror genre. I devoured anything with vampires in it (WAY before Twilight) and cut my teeth on R. L. Stine.

When I started pitching my first young adult novel—When the World was Flat (and we were in love)—to agents, I actually described it as a fantasy novel. Embarrassing as this is for someone with a writing degree to admit, I wasn’t a reader of science fiction and thought of it largely as stories set in space (hard science fiction). When I finally pieced together that Albert Einstein and his Theory of Everything were science and NOT fantasy (duh!), I started describing my story as science fiction fantasy and then soft science fiction and now science fiction romance and sometimes speculative fiction. The genre, however, that I think really sums it up is the non-existent genre of urban science fiction (a hypothetical counterpart to urban fantasy).

My follow up young adult novel, In The Beginning There Was Us, is also urban science fiction (I’m just going to go ahead and coin it as a genre). Both of my young adult novels look at re-imagined histories and possible scientific explanations for the inexplicable in a contemporary setting. For example, scientific theories I have developed (or dreamed up) about ghosts and luck. I use the term ‘scientific’ loosely, of course. The theories are only based in science – the rest is based in what if?

You know how kids go through the ‘why?’ phase. They ask what you’re doing and when you tell them they want to know why. And when you tell them why their next question is inevitably, ‘why?’ I think I’ve never left that phase behind. I enjoyed maths at school until my teachers stopped being able to explain to me why I needed to understand trigonometry and calculus. Then I dropped it (something I somewhat regret, but that saw me pass my final exams with flying colours!).

This insatiable curiosity has led me to the science fiction genre. The romance that’s spread throughout my novels is just the icing on the cake. Couple both of those with the young adult demographic and I have so much scope for my imagination!

Book Spotlight & Giveaway: Empath by S. Usher Evans

Title: Empath
Author: S. Usher Evans
Genre: Contemporary Fantasy

Lauren Dailey is in break-up hell.

Stuck between moving on and letting go, she puts on a brave face while crying herself to sleep at night. But when a mysterious voice promises escape from her sadness, she is suddenly transported to a new world. And in this place, the slightest touch pulls her out of her tortured emotions into the mind of another - an empath.

The villagers - sweet Aerona and her mischievous twins, wise Siors, and hunky Cefin - welcome her and the blessings her empath powers bring. But this world is not without its dangers. The Anghenfil, a fire-breathing monster, has haunted the village for decades, and has a taste for empaths. And that mysterious voice promising escape from sadness? It's sounding more like a whisper tinged with smoke and embers.

Can Lauren keep the monsters in the mountain and in her head at bay? Or will she succumb to the darkness like the empath before her…

***

Excerpt:

"Empaths have been legend for centuries," Siors said. "Some of the old texts say that an empath can read emotions, and others say that an empath is really connecting with the other person's soul."

Lauren grimaced; she wasn’t sure she liked the sound of that.

"So, there aren't any other empaths I can talk to?" she asked.

“No, the only other one I am aware of was taken by the Anghenfil."

"So this….Anghenfil." Lauren swallowed nervously. "You said that you found me near the caves where it lives? What…is it exactly?”

Siors placed a thick and dusty book on the table, flipping it open and turning the dusty pages. He paused and turned it around, showing Lauren a painting of a winged red dragon looming over a flaming city. Bright red eyes and gleaming white teeth rounded out the frightening image.

"Beautiful," Lauren pushed the book away before she had a full-blown panic attack. “And it ate the last empath, you say?"

"The empath had been summoned by the king to the castle in Traegaron. The beast itself had not been seen in centuries. Most thought it was just a myth. And then it appeared and destroyed half the castle as it hunted for her. Those who were there say it wrapped her up in its fearsome tail and carried her to these very mountains.”

Lauren caught the vision of the beast in the book again and wondered if it was the reason why she was here. She remembered that odd voice that she heard in her office moments before the earthquake—
She quickly squashed that train of thought to refocus her attention on Siors, and she began to play with her necklace anxiously.

"The beast has been seen every few years since that day," Siors said. “But I'm afraid we do not know what powers the beast may have; just the fire and the claws are enough to be getting on with."

"Do you have any more books about the Anghenfil?" Lauren asked.

"This is the end of my compendium on the subject," Siors smiled. "But I shall send word to my scholar-brother. He is the keeper of the great library in Traegaron and one of the wisest men in the entire kingdom. If there is more to be known—about the Anghenfil, or about yourself—then he will know it.”

About the Author:

S. Usher Evans is an author, blogger, and witty banter aficionado. Born in a small, suburban town in northwest Florida, she was seventeen before she realized that not all beach sand is white.

From a young age, she has always been a long-winded individual, first verbally (to the chagrin of her ever-loving parents) and then eventually channeled into the many novels that dotted her Windows 98 computer in the early 2000's.

After high school, she got the hell outta dodge and went to school near the nation's capital, where she somehow landed jobs at National Geographic, Discovery Channel, and the British Broadcasting Corporation, capping off her educational career with delivering the commencement address to 20,000 of her closest friends.

She determined she'd goofed off long enough with that television nonsense and got a "real job" as an IT consultant. Yet she continued to write, developing 20 page standard operating procedures and then coming home to write novels about bounty hunters, teenage magic users, and other nonsense. After a severe quarter life crisis at age 27, she decided to finally get a move on and share those novels with the world in hopes that she will never have to write another SOP again.

Blurb:

"It was obvious from the day he was born that the Gabriel boy took after his mother in every way. He would be a marked man from birth to death . . ."

Investigative journalist Tony Gabriel inherits a bizarre mystery when he is left the research papers and books of a long-dead Cambridge historian - and a human skull. With no clue to the meaning of this mysterious legacy, Tony puts his years as a reporter to use to investigate who he really is - and is stunned by what he uncovers.

"Suddenly, all the rules of his life seemed to have been broken at once."

Tony's investigations lead him to The Chadwick Foundation - a wealthy and secretive institution whose beliefs in the paranormal both repel and attract him. Are they just rich, powerful people playing an elaborate game, or have they truly gained paranormal powers to penetrate the mystery of the future?

Eve Canning is the keeper of The Foundation's secrets, a powerful and enigmatic woman whose regal beauty turns Tony’s search for the truth into a very personal quest - and his life and beliefs upside down.

Review:

Dr. Tony Gabriel is a science writer for a magazine called Insight and most of the time he works on exposes of fraudulent cases of psychics, mediums and fortune-tellers. As a scientist, Tony doesn't believe there is any evidence to support paranormal activity.

After his mother’s death, however, Tony soon comes to doubt that. For there are people out there who seem to know things about him, that even Tony doesn't know. How do they know all these things? Is any of it real, or is Tony just being led up the garden path?

His mother was involved in something called the Chadwick Foundation and after her death, Tony discovers all these papers and something even stranger: a human skull. What was his mother involved in? And why didn't he know any of it before?

The book is well written and keeps up the pace. The action takes place in three time lines, the present day, 1700s France and after World War II and they all blended together well. Tony is a likeable and engaging character and the reader feels they are on the quest with Tony as he tries to figure everything out.

We have everything from palm-reading, I Ching, physiognomy, numerology and people who will pay millions to find out if any of them are true, including governments and the rich elite. But Tony's investigations haven't gone unnoticed and someone doesn't want him to find the truth, someone prepared to kill to keep their secrets.

Eve was a mysterious Femme Fatale, but I just didn't feel any chemistry between her and Tony at all, but I can't put my finger on why. They had sex, but they may as well have been sitting down to tea and eating sandwiches. I just didn't feel their attraction to each other at all.

I enjoyed the book, it was an interesting tale with lots of twists and turns that would keep any mystery fan happy, but I'm afraid the ending let it down.

The rest of the book was so exciting, leading up to something and then with the ending - it just sort of ambled along and finished. But it didn't feel finished. I was surprised when I turned the next page and the book didn't continue. It ended with a whimper rather than a bang and it left me disappointed at the end.

He went through surgery, chemo and was pronounced cancer-free two weeks before my son Brady was born. I never dealt with those emotions I experienced while he was sick. There wasn’t time. But three years ago when a friend’s daughter was diagnosed with cancer, all of them came flooding back. As a result, I wrote A Taylor-Made Life. A Taylor-Made Life became an Amazon Bestseller and I’ve received letters from all over the world (e.g.UK, France, Uganda) saying how the story has touched hearts. It has a 4.21 Goodreads average with over 400 ratings and recently won the 2014 RomCon Reader’s Choice Award.

The story is a finalist in the 2015 Electroinc Publishing Industy Coalition’s (EPIC) eBook Award. ATML also won several RWA chapter contests. It continues to touch people with its special message.

“A Taylor-Made Life is one of the best books I’ve read this year and it’s not one I’ll soon forget… Taylor and Gavin stole my heart and my breath, and I wasn’t ready to let them go.” – Nikki Barrett, Storm Goddess Book Reviews

“Beautifully written, and I would dare anyone not to cry….. Gavin and Taylor have such depth and emotion, it’s hard not to fall in love with them. These two characters will remain in my memory forever.” – Melissa Limoges, Insert Clever Quip Here Book Reviews

“6 Stars, 2 full boxes of Kleenex…Beautiful!” – a.c. Mason, bestselling author “Kary Rader is a wonderful new voice in New Adult fiction. Taylor-Made is a must-read.”– Jill Limber, author and editor, Boroughs Publishing Group

About the Book

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERATitle: Like A Bird
Author: Hannah Carrow
Genre: Erotic Romance

Rachel is a young widow with two children. She meets David, a Catholic priest, and they are immediately attracted to each other in a shocking and powerful way. They experience an extraordinary and glorious love which, over time, develops into a mindless sexual obsession that bears witness to the complete disintegration of her mind and takes her to the edge of madness.

She felt a sense of wonder and amazement that she had come across a creature such as he. He wasn’t there and then he was, and he would always be. After all, such things were often caught within the spiral of our dreams, the trickle of imagination, seized upon by thought and thrown about in some internal night.

Excerpt:

Rachel and David did not acknowledge what had happened the previous day. They didn’t dare, for fear of what it might reveal. How could they possibly acknowledge such ignoble desecration when they were anchored in the dark themselves? Rachel had no idea how to proceed after what had passed between them. David neither knew nor did he want to know. Bewildered, Rachel looked to him for answers, but she found none in his impassive, blank expression.

She realised that David was trying to ignore what happened, for it had undermined him to realise that he was capable of such a thing, given his circumstances. He had hardly realised what he had done and felt out of control, a sensation he was not familiar with and did not welcome. He was in a state of shock. But Rachel’s presence blinded him; it sought him out. It preyed upon him and snatched him up. She had colonised him; she had altered him. She had enclosed him in her bright seduction.

But to take this further would be ill-considered. Yet he knew he would. He had no choice; he ached for her. He had no willpower or understanding of himself. This would go on. It would become a fact of his existence, and it made him sightless.

About Hannah Carrow

Like A Bird author photoI am an artist living and working in London. I spent my late childhood years at boarding school in Cornwall. I have always loved the countryside and the sea. I later attended St Martin’s School of Art in London in the 1980s and was awarded a BA Hons Degree in Fine Art.

Like A Bird is my first novel. It has been a story that I have needed to tell for a long time. My son suggested I should write it as much of it is true. Now that I am in my early sixties I can look back upon my life and remember it as it was.

Blog Tour/Guest Post: Talon of the Hawk by Jeffe Kennedy

Guest Post
by Jeffe Kennedy

When I do guest posts like this, I ask my lovely blogger hosts to give me a suggested topic. This is because I’m just SO out of ideas for blog posts. Also, I’ve been a writer long enough that I don’t have a good sense any more of what readers are most interested in hearing about.

But this can be a double-edged sword, because sometimes I get a topic like this one: to name five (or ten) writers I admire.

At least they gave me the option to do ten, right??

This is always difficult to answer because I have to pare down a list of hundreds, if not thousands. But this question is particularly interesting because it’s about writers I ADMIRE, which isn’t the same as the ones who write books I like or who are my besties.

Admiration is a different thing and it was interesting to contemplate. So here’s my list of ten (of course!) writers I admire and why.

Margaret Atwood – Because she writes in whatever genre she wants to, to tell the story that interests her. She’s ballsy and unapologetic. She’s also written some of my favorite books of all time – and each feels like something totally new. And she’s on twitter, saying witty things. Awesome.

Carolyn Crane – Okay, she IS my bestie and critique partner. But I admire Carolyn for sticking to her guns on self-publishing her books (after an unhappy experience with traditional publishing). Her commitment to producing quality books – you would not believe how hard she works! – continues to inspire me.

Neil Gaiman – Oh look, the only guy on my list! Not only is Neil a brilliant writer, but he remains a humble, even self-effacing, and genuine person. With over two-million twitter followers and he still personally engages with readers and offers sage, thoughtful advice and answers questions? Amazing.

Thea Harrison – Last fall I started reading Thea’s Elder Races series and it’s SO GOOD. She impresses me so much how she continues to spin fresh, new and compelling stories. Also, she’s been writing a *long* time under various names. I admire her so much for having that kind of career staying power.

Darynda Jones – So, yes, Darynda is also a good friend. And I’ve known her since just before her Charley Davidson series came out and has become such a phenomenon. What I admire about Darynda so much is that she still comes to our local chapter meetings, has no ego over her success, and generously helps other writers. She is my model for how to be graceful with huge success.

Ursula Le Guin – One of the lions of the fantasy genre, Ursula has been writing forever (it feels like) and stands up unashamedly for quality in genre fiction. She said amazingly smart things about genre fiction when she won the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters last year (http://www.nationalbook.org/amerletters_2014_uleguin.html#.VSVRMJNyRsk) and set Katsuo Ishiguro back on his heels for his obnoxious remarks about the fantasy genre (http://bookviewcafe.com/blog/2015/03/02/are-they-going-to-say-this-is-fantasy/comment-page-1/). She is one of my heroes.

Anne McCaffrey – Another long-time veteran of SFF, Anne blazed a trail in mixing up fantasy and romance, a path I greatly appreciate her carving out for us. Though practically every woman I meet who reads SFF will say that Anne McCaffrey books were formative for them, I feel like she doesn’t get enough credit for her huge impact on the genre.

Anaïs Nin – Another pioneer of her era, Anaïs wrote frank and open erotica from a woman’s perspective. Even when she wrote from a male point of view, the female gaze is strong and compelling. Her famous quote, “And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom” perfectly describes her bravery as a writer and as a person.

Nora Roberts/JD Robb – Nora pretty much tops every list of mine. She has had an amazing, smartly managed long-term career, she’s ballsy, intelligent, and an incredible writer who, as J.D. Robb, is up to over 40 books in her In Death series. I don’t know how she does it. I want to be her – well, her and Neil Gaiman – when I grow up.

Nalini Singh – Nalini is another writer who has managed to stay sweet, approachable and ego-free despite her glamorous level of success. She responds to people on twitter – with over 25K followers (you can tell this is a gold standard for me) – and she’s supportive of other writers. A really lovely person who continues to write astonishingly good books.

So there’s my list. And yes, I deleted and added names as I went to get to ten. What do you think of my criteria? Who would you add to the list?

Book Description:

A HEAVY CROWN

Three daughters were born to High King Uorsin, in place of the son he wanted. The youngest, lovely and sweet. The middle, pretty and subtle, with an air of magic. And the eldest, the Heir. A girl grudgingly honed to leadership, not beauty, to bear the sword and honor of the king.

Ursula’s loyalty is as ingrained as her straight warrior’s spine. She protects the peace of the Twelve Kingdoms with sweat and blood, her sisters from threats far and near. And she protects her father to prove her worth. But she never imagined her loyalty would become an open question on palace grounds. That her father would receive her with a foreign witch at one side and a hireling captain at the other—that soldiers would look on her as a woman, not as a warrior. She also never expected to decide the destiny of her sisters, of her people, of the Twelve Kingdoms and the Thirteenth. Not with her father still on the throne and war in the air. But the choice is before her. And the Heir must lead…

About the Book

Title: Bai Tide
 Author: Erika Mitchell
 Genre: Espionage Thriller

After the events of Blood Money, CIA case officer Bai Hsu is assigned to a high-security private school for what he’s told is an easy assignment. Just a few months after he arrives, a hostile operative with ties to North Korea tries to break in to a school event, with motives unknown.

As his investigation progresses, he unravels a plot that, if not stopped, will result in the untimely and murderous deaths of tens of millions of people. Bai Tide is Bai’s greatest challenge yet. A mission that will take him from the windswept beaches of San Diego to a whiteout blizzard in the foothills of Pyongyang, and make him question everything he thought he knew about working in the field…and about himself.

Author Bio

Erika Mitchell was born in Orange County, California to a published author and an Anarchist's Cookbook aficionado. She moved to Seattle, Washington as a freshman in high school, where she promptly realized she owned just one pair of pants and that was going to be a problem in a place with an actual winter. She graduated from Northwest University in 2003 with a degree in Psychology, which she has yet to use.

After a brief foray into technical recruiting (a disaster), she found her calling as a writer and, wonder of wonders, was actually able to find a job where someone paid her to do just that as a blogger. Blogging turned into writing novels, where Erika has found her niche in the espionage and thriller genre. Erika currently resides in a small suburb outside Seattle with her husband and two children.

Book Spotlight: Closely Guarded Secret by Natalie Money

Many might envy Alixandra Quinn. She rubs shoulders with the rich and famous at glitzy society balls and fund-raisers as a photographer for a popular magazine. But, do the envious notice Ali always goes home alone? She has cut herself off from personal relationships and emotional entanglements. It’s a strategy to cope with her past, and for ten years, her strategy has worked.

That is, until she meets Bryce Steede, a young and bold Silicon Valley entrepreneur. When Ali becomes the center of his attention, suddenly her world gets turned upside-down. She may have convinced herself that life is fine the way it is, but he is determined to break down her carefully constructed walls, free her mind and body, and show her pleasures that she couldn't have imagined.

As Ali navigates through this uncharted journey of self-discovery, she must find the balance between her head and her heart. Is Bryce just another heartache waiting to happen? Will a secret from her past come back to haunt her? Or will Ali make peace with her past and find true happiness . . .

I awaken with a jolt, thinking I’ve fallen out of my seat. As usual, when I fly, I end up scrunched all the way down on the seat as far as I can go. If I wasn’t wearing my seatbelt, I’d be on the floor. Did we hit something? Confused, I sit up, trying to assess the situation only to notice we’re in some awful turbulence. Angry, dark, purple to black rain clouds surround us. My heart starts pounding in my chest. The plane rocks side to side, bouncing us all over the sky. I pull out my earbuds hoping to hear the Captain’s voice saying everything’s okay.

Bryce pries my hand off the armrest and interlocks our fingers. I look over at him, my eyes wide with terror. He’s talking to me, trying to give me reassurance. The only thing going through my mind right now is how afraid I am.

“Shhh, it’s going to be okay, Ali.” He has such a soothing voice when he’s not being an ass. I try to say something, but I can’t speak. Nothing will come out of my mouth
.
“Focus on me.” His thumb strokes the back of my hand. It’s serene and has an instant calming effect on me until we hit another pocket of air. Images of the Captain fighting for dominance over the weather and control of the plane against the storm flash through my mind. I know he’s doing all he can so we don’t spiral downward.

Other passengers cry out in panic. My head jerks back toward the window. I can barely breathe. I don’t want him to see me like this - raw emotions, so vulnerable. Weak.

He places his hand on my face, turning it towards him. “Don’t cry. I’ve got you. Just keep looking at me, okay?” He’s trying to calm me but the only thing I can do is nod. I tighten my grip on his hand and he lets me know it’s all right.

My heart is beating so fast, so hard, I can feel it in my ears and can hear each beat. Tears roll down my face and he gently wipes them away with his thumb. In this moment, as much as I despise him, I’m glad he’s here with me.

“I need you to take deep breaths. Can you do that? Do what I do, okay?” I watch his mouth and listen. We hit another pocket of air, but not as violent as the others. My eyes grow wider as more tears stream down my face.

“I’m here. I’m not going to let anything happen to you. Keep looking at me. Ali, I need you to focus on me and listen. Breathe with me.” All the while, he’s still stroking my hand.

When my breathing gets under control, he leans over the armrest wrapping me in a blanket of calm in the comfort of his arms. I collapse into him. My cries are silent as he holds me and strokes my hair. He inhales deeply, gripping me tighter.

Natalie Money is a former corporate travel agent, a wife, and a cat wrangler. As far back as she can recall, she has always loved to people watch and make up stories about their lives. After many years of creating and getting to know the characters and their stories in her mind, she has finally decided to bring them to life on paper in her first novel, Closely Guarded Secret.

With her husbands job, they're known to relocate often, so when people ask where she lives, she describes herself as a World Citizen.
