Book Spotlight: Blood Bewitched by Ashlynne Laynne

Title: Blood Bewitched (The Progeny Series #5)
Author: Ashlynne Laynne
Genre: Paranormal Romance

Nothing in life is a coincidence.”

Forces are aligning in Shauna Rousseau’s life. A gifted Wiccan warrior and unique true half-blooded vampire, she is fate personified with an incredible destiny to fulfill. The ultimate war between good and evil is brewing, a revolution that will change our world forever.

Sides are being chosen, but Shauna has some unfinished family business. With her siblings and husband by her side, the pregnant newborn travels to Louisiana to shake her family tree. Lies are uncovered that will irrevocably damage the siblings’ lives.

Everyone has a past. It’s time for Shauna Rousseau to face hers.

***

Excerpt:

One look into Ascher’s eyes and Shauna’s simmering blood cooled. She was lost. So grateful to have him in her life. Immersed in a deep, blue ocean and awash in the depth of love she felt for this man she was so proud to call her own. With everything going wrong in their world, this was one of the things that was right. There was no denying the fact that they were made for one another.

“Thank you for the bracelet and—” Shauna gestured her hands to encompass the room colorfully decorated with balloons and fragrant with roses meant to celebrate the day of her birth. “—well, for everything.”

“No, sweetheart. I’m the one who should be thanking you for saving me.” His fingertips slipped along the line of her jaw as he lifted her head to meet his eyes. “Because of you, I’m a whole man…a living, breathing, feeling individual for the first time in my existence. You make me feel so much, Shauna. You brought me outside of myself and showed me the wonders of this world. Because of you, I realize how precious life is…that there is so much to fight for.”

The surrender in his eyes was so at odds with the wild man that had just screwed her into submission, but she loved that about him. He was many things. Human. Vampire. Warrior and worrier. Loving husband and loyal brother. Ascher was her shaded, sexy lover and a protector ready to risk himself to prevent anyone from doing her harm. He was possessive, handsome, and unyielding when it came to her safety. But most of all, he was simply hers. Looking into his eyes was like seeing them for the first time, all the adoration, passion and promise shining from their gorgeous depths.

She had no choice but to whisper, “I love you.”

He cupped her face in his palms. “Forever.” His lips then turned up into the smirk he usually reserved for teasing her. “Thank you for the player, too.”

While she should have had enough, it wasn’t. Shauna would never get her fill of this sexy man who somehow desired and loved her just as much. So, she rolled him beneath her.

About the Progeny Series:

At its core, The Progeny Series is simply about a man and woman who fall in love. The fact that he’s a half-blood (half-human, half vampire) and she’s a Wiccan human are secondary factors. This series encompasses a family dynamic of which we’ve never seen.

The Rousseaus share a common mortal and immortal bloodline, but loyalty is the thread binding this vampire clan. Shauna and Ascher’s dissuaded love only strengthens the family bonds. Their unique union transcends bloodlines and completes the prophecy, defying the beliefs of centuries old covenants while shattering the wall between the Wiccan and vampire worlds that have existed for ages.

This series is erotic paranormal romance intended for adults and contains strong sexual content, adult sensuality, language and themes.

About the Author:

Ashlynne Layne is an award winning songwriter, poet, and author of erotic paranormal and contemporary romance. She’s always had a soft spot in her heart for vampires but grew tired of the garlic fearing, sun-loathing night stalkers of old. An avid horror movie fan, she tends to enjoy media and music of a younger, more eclectic nature. This was the catalyst for her writing The Progeny.

Ashlynne loves writing on the edge—combining the erotica and romance genres—and thinks of Ascher and Shauna as the wicked, damned version of Romeo and Juliet. She is currently working on books six and seven of her Progeny Series, book one of her upcoming Alterity Series, and a novella spin off. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, reading, and spending time with her family. She juggles the hats of wife, mother, full time employee and part-time writer, hoping to write exclusively one day soon.

She lives in the Carolinas with her husband and son.

Excerpt:

“There has been a possible sighting of Willoughby.” Constantine motioned at Liza, and she hurried to refill his teacup.

Gag.

“I can’t say more at this time, but you should be getting ready for a trip at short notice,” he said.

Alex nodded, unperturbed as always by Constantine’s exaggerated air of mystery.

I wasn’t that big a person. “You got us out of bed to tell us someone’s seen the bad guy, but not who or where? What’s next?” I deepened my voice to a basso. “It will rain one day in the near or distant future.” In my normal pitch, I asked, “Was that doomsday-worthy enough for you?”

“Cherry, this is all I can tell you right now. You have to trust me. What matters is we may have a clue as to his surroundings, if not his intentions.”

“A clue you won’t share with the class.”

“I’m sure he’ll tell us more when he knows more.” Alex placed one hand over mine, which I’d apparently fisted without realizing it. His effort at soothing me had the opposite result.

“He knows more now.” I locked my gaze on Constantine’s. “Don’t you?”

Constantine shook his head and smiled ruefully. “When did you become so cynical?”

I scrunched my face in mock concentration, then widened my eyes. “I know! Must have been about the same time I found out you’d been lying to me for years, and our entire relationship was a sham. Yup, that was the exact moment.”

His eyes were a stormy midnight blue that usually meant anger or extreme pain. Yes, the man came with preinstalled mood-rings on his face.

I wasn’t being fair. His maker had appointed him my sponsor. She wanted me to fall for him, and it hadn’t taken long for that to happen. But at the time, Constantine didn’t know Ádísa had ordered my turning. And contrary to her wishes, he’d really loved me in return. Just weeks ago, he insisted he still did.

Liza walked up behind Constantine, and laid both hands on his shoulders. Until that moment, I’d only thought of her as Head Concubine. I’d assumed all they shared was sex and blood. Apparently, I’d been at least partially wrong there.

How well she knew him astounded me. Even though Constantine’s posture didn’t change, Liza noticed the subtle increase of tension in his body, just like I did. Thing was, I couldn’t tell if Constantine’s discomfort was out of guilt over the lies he’d told me in the past—for which he’d atoned by killing his own maker—or because he really knew more about Willoughby than he let on.

I didn’t want it to be the latter. Not when he’d been regaining my trust. My stomach clenched at the possibility. Instead of asking him, I said, “Fine, be mysterious. But while we’re here, can you remind Alex we’re not supposed to keep in touch with our families?” Might as well get one problem out of the way.

The tiny lines of tension around Constantine’s eyes smoothed out, and his jaw relaxed. Was it me, or did my ex seem relieved by my change of subject?

Before Constantine could speak, Alex piped in. “I want Cherry and me to meet each other’s folks. I know it’s not something vampires do, but I’m still alive as far as my mother knows, and I don’t see how Cherry’s family would be anything but ecstatic to see her again. She was never declared dead, just missing, so she can tell them she was off finding herself or something.”

I didn’t expect the matter-of-fact way he’d presented his case to do him any good. What he was asking went against council policy. No way would Constantine condone it.

Constantine smiled, his irises now faded to their normal light blue. “We have been doing things our own way for a while now.” He shrugged, apparently oblivious to how my mouth gaped at his response. “I don’t see why you shouldn’t do as you please, as long as you’re careful. I will, however, be joining you when you visit Cherry’s parents. As a precautionary measure, in case things go awry. I’ll have to make some arrangements first, but we should be able to leave by the end of the week.”

It was obvious from Alex’s eager expression that he’d go along with anything to get the go-ahead for his silly fantasy. I didn’t exactly view things the same way. It was weird how readily Constantine had agreed.

“Precautionary measure?” I asked. “You plan to mind-wipe them, if our little reunion is threatening to the vampire community?” Meaning if my parents somehow realized I was undead, freaked out, and threatened to tell the world about our existence.

Excerpt:

Carefully stepping around scattered, fractured boards, trunks and lengths of tangled rope, Jordan and Ferrous neared the last grouping of rocks at the trees’ edge. Jordan sighed. About time.

A faint heartbeat crawled out of the obscure shadows, stalked up his spine. Something lived from this bloody mess. Though barely.

Jordan stilled.

Ferrous turned to the left. “I feel it too.”

Jordan followed.

On the opposite side of the rocks, jagged boards bumped, clattering against a boulder. A mass of tangled human remains bobbed and swayed with each lap of water against the shore.

From this mess, a heartbeat cried. Jordan closed his eyes and sighed as his stomach flipped. He would find it. He stepped into the water amid the carnage and shuddered. I must move as hastily as possible. I can do this. The sound of life grasped him as if a hand itself clasped his flesh. He flinched, then turned to the left.

An arm’s length away, half in the water, lay a woman. Her limbs were twisted and broken, as if made of nothing more than weeds. A man’s head, severed from the body it had once belonged to, floated close to her hand. Jordan’s heart pinched, and the scales on his elbows prickled anew.

No one deserved to be half alive after experiencing a tragedy such as this. He stepped up next to her, knocking the human debris away with his boot. He leaned down and wrapped one hand about her slim, bare shoulders. The other he slid beneath her knees, fisting up a handful of her full skirts. She should have drowned in such a garment. He lifted her, pulling her body up against his.

She hung like a sack of barley in his grasp. Her long, wet skirts and hair trailed cold water in a stream, trickling over the rocks and babbling down into his boots. He turned and stumbled along the slag toward the trees.

Ferrous turned after him. “She won’t live, Jordan.” He strode behind him. “Leave her.”

Her clothing, laden with seawater, soaked his coat in blood. Was it hers or the rotting blood of the pool in which she had lain? He shook his head. Don’t think about the stench. He grimaced. Think about her.

Ferrous was right. She would never live.

He fell to his knees and laid her on the high grass that bordered the trees. Her dress was that of an aristocrat, finely tailored with small pearls and embroidery now torn open down to her flesh in several places. Her hair had been swept up with the sun, golden rays that now hid beneath a cloud of red death. “I will end her suffering.” Yes, that was the correct thing to do.

“For bloody sake, Jordan. You are not to indulge unless you have an inkling she may be the one. There are no exceptions to our rules. Look what happens to Ilmir when he breaks one. Who knows what calamity awaits us in London.”

Jordan’s jaw clenched, and he narrowed his eyes, refusing to look at Ferrous, who stood behind him. “This is different, and you damn well know it. I am not Ilmir, and she is not a woman I am courting. She is dying.”

“Being chivalrous?” Ferrous threw up his hands, grumbled and walked through the trees back toward the shore. “Make haste. I wish to make this hellish scene vanish this hellish scene and be to London to deal with Ilmir.”

Did Ferrous truly think he wanted to do this? To kill another woman was the last thing he wished. Twenty years had passed… Jordan inhaled a deep breath and blew it out between tense lips. He ran his fingers down her pale cheek and around her chin, tilting her face toward his. A slender nose, full, angelic lips, and noble cheekbones. A beauty. “To a better afterlife, dear.”

He raised her chin, exposing her long, graceful neck and faintly beating pulse. Another death…

Dash it. He stared unblinking at the slight flutter of her blood beneath her skin. Relax, Jordan. He closed his eyes and exhaled. All will be well.

Prickling pain clawed through the roof of his mouth as his two pointed teeth extended into thin slivers of bone. He stared down at her neck. She had been floating in blood and seawater. He spit on her neck, twice. His saliva glimmered as it slid down her throat to the grass below. There, that should wash away the dirt she had stewed in. Or would it? His throat tightened. Don’t lick her. Be done with it.

He leaned in and pressed his teeth to her vein. His mouth opened, saliva pooled heavily, and his tongue thickened. The pouches by his back teeth filled with poisonous blood, forcing his jaw still wider. He inhaled a jagged breath. His heart leapt and pounded, vibrating through his entire being…

Bite her, Jordan. Be done with it. Bite her.

Her faint pulse bumped against his teeth, willing him to take her as his mate. Mate? Well, that urge was pointless. She would pass just as swiftly as the others. He rolled his lip back and hissed, then pressed, slicing through her soft, salty outer skin and into her tepid blood flowing below.

She didn’t flinch.

This was the first time he had taken a woman when he was not passionately joined with her. Odder yet not to have her scream. To have her do nothing but lie on the wilted grass.

He swallowed. Dirt be damned, he needed to taste her and know that one essence of the life he now took. He fluttered his tongue on her smooth skin. Warm, salty blood slid thickly down his tongue. Damn. His muscles quivered as his poisonous blood streamed from his pouches and down his teeth, twisting into her veins. His cock pressed painfully hard against his thigh.

The task was done. There would be no more. He would not take his pleasure in her. He would not know the feel of her flesh against his. He would never know her favorite color. This woman, like all the others who had come before, was not meant to be his. Enough!

He growled and opened his mouth wide. Her soft flesh slipped from his fangs. He pulled his head back, and their mixed blood trailed in streams down her neck and dress. His vision shifted and popped. Adrenaline mixed with power bubbled through his veins. This…this, he had missed.

This was what he was meant to be. His full elemental power at a glimpse. He tossed his hair back and then growled a dragon’s cry up to where the moon should hang in a radiant, colored vision. Yet only the ebony fog resided tonight. There was no moon to lighten this scene. His vision rippled with detailed clarity. Ah. Indeed. This was the power that years of existence without his mate had diminished. He wanted this power back. It had been too long. In a burst of speckled light, everything changed back to somber mist. Bloody hell. His throat closed off, and his eyes burned. No! He swallowed hard, and his shoulders sagged. This was a tease. A temptation.

He closed his eyes and shook his head. He would never know more of what the Zir were than this… Death and a glimpse of the exhilarating power they were destined to have.

He inhaled and smelled her metallic, sweet blood on his lips. His tongue traced his teeth and upper lip, gathering up the enslaving essence. Sweet orange blossoms and candied cherries. His made-up version of what she should taste like. Remember her. His jaw trembled as hot blood pounded through him to his groin. His soul wanted more of her. To mate. To love. To live a lifetime of companionship.

He clenched his teeth, and his fangs pierced his lower lip. You have done enough to end her suffering. Quite enough. Let her be. He opened his eyes once more.

A shadow shaped as Ferrous stood head down and arms straight out in the air at the rocks’ edge. “Make haste. I wait no more.”

Jordan placed her head softly back on the grass. “Will scant be a moment more of pain, beauty.” He trailed his hand down her broken arm to a heavy, thick bracelet looping her wrist. He unclasped the chain and slowly rubbed the metal between his fingers. His token of her death. He tucked the jewelry in his inner coat pocket, then rose to his full height. Turning to his left, he skulked into the inky woods.

I stood up to step outside the office and was shocked to see that it was Roxanne.  Dressed up and not at all looking like she had spent the last forty-eight hours in jail accused of murder.  She bounced back well.  If I were in her place, I would be curled up on a couch somewhere, not out on the town looking glam.

“What are you doing here?”  I exclaimed.  To say I was shocked was an understatement.  Yesterday, she didn’t think making her bail was even a possibility and yet less than twenty-four hours later, here she stood looking as if none of that had happened.

“You don’t seem so happy to see me,” she joked seeming in good spirits for her situation.  I was caught off guard by her casual, upbeat attitude.  It made me wonder if she was having a moment of temporary insanity and had forgotten she was being charged with murder.

“I’m just surprised; that’s all. I’m glad to see you.  I’m glad you got out. When did you get out?” I asked.

“This morning. I then went to Debbie’s to shower - my apartment is still a crime scene and even if it wasn’t I couldn’t fathom going back there. I don’t think I can ever go back there. After I put on my clothes and felt somewhat normal again, I came here hoping to find you.”

“Who bailed you out?” I asked, curious because as of yesterday, she hadn’t told her family and said none of her friends had that kind of money.  She told me she was hoping the news wouldn’t travel all the way to Iowa, where her family lived.  She didn’t want them to know. She said they didn’t have even close to that kind of money, and she wanted to save them from the worry. Personally, I thought it was taking a big risk that they wouldn’t find out.  If they spent any time surfing the web looking at news, they were bound to come across it. Nothing could stay very secret these days it seemed. Not to mention the cops or lawyers were sure to contact people back home for information at some point - a fact I had pointed out to her, but which she just ignored.

“No idea.”

“Really?  How is that possible?”

Lori Powers loved being a flight attendant because life at home was a constant nightmare of physical and mental abuse. But her own trauma paled in comparison to her husband’s sexual abuse of their only child. Emily’s suicide note blamed Lori for failing to protect her. Overwhelmed by guilt, Lori sought justice for her Emily. When she heard the voices, she murdered domineering, abusive men whose misfortune brought them across her path.

Review

His characters become embedded in our psyches and the pace of his unraveling of his thriller is a ride not easily forgotten. Cary Allen Stone is an important name to watch. This is one superb crime writer!”––Grady Harp, Amazon, November 2014

Excerpt:

It is written in blood, his blood. A guy named Nicholas Parker, an airline captain. The three of us stand at the foot of the bed and stare. Harmon doesn’t speak. Mika doesn’t say a word. And even if I knew what to say, I can’t. Right up on the wall over Parker, written in dried blood red letters is––J A K E

The rest of the investigators present mostly FBI agents and locals go about the gruesome task of collecting evidence. The captain is going to be bagged, tagged and frozen in the morgue at least until the autopsy is completed.

The rest of his flight crew has been rounded up and is currently sitting in the lobby in deep shock. They are providing as much detail as they possibly can in between the trauma and the crying. A young flight attendant who can’t be more than twenty is shaking so severely they are going to sedate her. There is one crew member missing––Lori Powers.

Lightning is direct current. A bolt can account for twenty to forty thousand amperes, two hundred million volts. It is calculated to be hotter than the surface of the sun. When you are struck by lightening it leaves feather burns on your skin that slowly fade after a few days. Death occurs in milliseconds.

Sometimes, I hate to be right. Sometimes, I turn the other cheek. Sometimes, I just want to run home and hide under the covers. There are times when I wish I had never been born. I would rather have been struck by lightning than to live through this. At least it would have been over in milliseconds.

All flowers look beautiful but some are poisonous––even deadly.

Lirium plays the part of the grim reaper well, with his dark trenchcoat, jackboots, and the black marks on his soul that every debt collector carries. He's just in it for his cut, the ten percent of the life energy he collects before he transfers it on to the high potentials, the people who will make the world a better place with their brains, their work, and their lives.

That hit of life energy, a bottle of vodka, and a visit from one of Madam Anastazja's sex workers keep him alive, stable, and mostly sane... until he collects again. But when his recovery ritual is disrupted by a sex worker who isn't what she seems, he has to choose between doing an illegal hit for a girl whose story has more holes than his soul or facing the bottle alone--a dark pit he's not sure he'll be able to climb out of again.

Excerpt:

My jackboots are new, the latest ultra-light material out of Hong Kong’s synthetics district, and they make a strange squeaking sound against the hospital floor. It’s the kind of sound that might gather snickers or a raised eyebrow, but no one looks at me, at least not on purpose. I stroll past the ICU desk, taking my time, breathing in the antiseptic smell that masks the odor of death held back by machines and drugs and round-the-clock care. The nurses duck their heads and study their charts, ignoring me. As if catching my eye might mean I’m coming to collect their debt, rather than Mr. Henry’s in Room 301.

The floor is so highly polished that I see the reflection of my trenchcoat running ahead of me, black as a midnight grave, a spook that lives on the surface of the oft-scrubbed tiles. It reaches the door to 301 before me and disappears in the dim, flickering light coming from the room. The spook has gone back where he belongs, into the dark recesses of my soul, assuming I still have one. If I was a betting man, I would say the odds of having a soul keep getting longer with every transfer I do. The older debt collectors, the ones who are still alive, don’t have anything shining out of their dull-glass eyes, even when they’re hyped up on a transfer. There’s no telling what my eyes look like.

I stopped looking in the mirror a long time ago.

Mr. Henry’s hooked up in all the usual places—tubes in his arms and monitor patches hovering over his temples and the blue-veined skin of his chest. His knobbed knees and shriveled legs stick out the end of the blanket. I don’t know if he’s tossed the blanket aside or the nurses just forgot to cover him up again after his sponge bath or whatever they do to prepare patients for a debt transfer. Goosebumps raise the hair on what’s left of his legs into a small forest of gray fur. I tug the thin, white-weave blanket over his exposed legs, and Mr. Henry opens his eyes.

They’re pale green and watery—washed out and used up like the rest of him.

“You’ve come for me,” he says.

I pick up one of the hard-backed, plastic hospital chairs, the kind that makes you uncomfortable sticking around the ICU, just in case all the death-waiting-to-happen doesn’t do the trick. I carefully set it down, backward facing at the head of Mr. Henry’s bed, and settle in. I don’t answer him, just study him for a moment over my laced fingers.

“What’s your name, son?” he asks, which makes me lean back and mentally check over his file again. No, he’s not an Alzheimer’s patient. He shouldn’t think I’m his son. And I’m only twenty, but no one’s mistaken me for a boy in a while, not since I started collecting.

“Lirium,” I say. It’s just my collector name, short for Delirium. Some punk collector thought it was funny when we went through training and it stuck. I don’t use my real name anymore, so it’s as good as any. Most people don’t ask.

“Is it going to hurt, Lirium?” His hand wanders out from the blanket, shaking a little and fluttering around his chest, like it’s searching for something. Then it lands on the rail of his bed and grips it.

“No, sir.” Relief gushes through me like water from a busted hose. When patients have been properly prepared, that’s the question they ask. It means they’re ready. I should thank the nurses on the way out, if I can get one of them to look at me. “It won’t hurt at all, Mr. Henry. In fact, it will be a relief.”

This isn’t really true, but I imagine it will be better than what he’s feeling now, all the aches and pains of the cancer slowly eating him from the inside out. This is where I usually tell them that transferring out is a good thing and how paying their debt will make the world a better place. I tell them it’s better for everyone—they get relief from having to live the last painful stages of their disease, they’re no longer a drain on the resources of the world, and someone else, someone in the height of their productivity, whose contributions to the world will be long lasting, will receive their debt and do even more with it than they can imagine. And I get my cut. Everyone wins!

I usually leave out that last part.

Excerpt:

As he ventured further along the tree line, the birds started chattering and became restless. The squirrels quickly climbed trees, hiding in their little holes. Devlin’s ears strained to hear what they were hearing. He stepped into the tree line, and faded into the shadows, awaiting what threat may come. His hand went to the hilt of his sword, muscles tensed, ready for a fight. What he saw next was completely unexpected.

A young woman treaded softly out of the trees, along one of the many paths the healers used to forage for herbs and fetch water from the brook; a woman Devlin had never seen. She was not garbed in the traditional broadcloth dress, but in pants and some type of jerkin. He’d never seen such clothing. Her hair was pulled away from her face and high atop her head, in a small circle with a tail flowing to her shoulders. Much like a horse’s tail. He stood silently, waiting to see what she’d do.

This woman was not from around here; that much was obvious. His muscles coiled, ready to pounce should she take off toward the keep. She simply sat down on the top of the hill, in the rays of the sun, and watched the children. She seemed to be in awe of what she saw in front of her.

Devlin wove silently through the trees to the path she’d emerged on. Advancing with years of learned stealth, he moved up behind her. When he was within a few steps, she still was unaware of his presence.

The breeze brought a whiff of her scent to him. A sweeter smell Devlin had never encountered. His body reacted immediately. His knees went weak as he breathed her in.

"Who are ye?" Devlin demanded, sounding a bit gruffer than planned.

She jumped, and was gone. Like a ghost into the night. He couldn't believe his eyes. Glancing down, he saw the slight indention from her footsteps. He followed them down the path until they abruptly ended at the brook. He searched the area for her campsite or any signs of where she’d come from. She was a mystery.

After minutes of searching, a sound wafted up to his ears. Tilting his head, he recognized the bells of the gypsy troupe that travelled through the lands. It was time for him to head to the keep and resume the duties of middle son.

Guest Post & Giveaway - Seed: Keepers of Genesis by DB Nielsen

Guest Post/ Blog: DB Nielsen (Seed: Keepers of Genesis 1)

Take a Journey through History with Sage Woods…

Isn’t it a thrilling feeling when you open up the pages of a book and you can be with Elizabeth Bennett as she falls in love with Darcy at Pemberley? Discover the madwoman locked up in the attic with Jane Eyre? And wander the Yorkshire Moors with Catherine and Heathcliff?

Have you ever had the feeling that you don’t just want to read a book but that you want to climb inside its world and live there? Have you ever talked about characters as if they were your friends and felt like you know them better than you know the people at your work or school?

That’s why the places and historical sites in my novel are as accurate as I can make them, as I’d love for readers to be able to travel to the places my main protagonist, Sage Woods has been to and lived in…

I’d like to invite you on a journey of the imagination – one where, if you have the time and inclination, you can retrace and relive in reality. I’d like to take you on a visual tour of some of the places Sage visits on her journey of discovery, places that exist in our real world… some that are bizarre, some haunting, some macabre, and some romantic… Let’s begin…

We start our tour in the Kentish countryside where Sage Woods lives with her family.

The natural, haunting beauty of the landscape allows for all kinds of supernatural occurrences:

“…the landscape retained its drenched mossy greenery. The silver birch trees shimmered against its lushness like something out of a fairy tale and, most evenings, the sky reflected the same silvery-grey hues while, during the day, it remained an oppressive and unchanging waterlogged gunpowder...”

If you thought that Bella and Edward’s tryst in a field of flowers was romantic or sexy, then Kent has a lot to offer in its local ‘wildlife’. Living close to the Woods’ family in a Gothic ruin is its mysterious caretaker – that’s if you like your Byronic hero-villains a little ‘rough around the edges’. Yet Finn also displays a sensitive side as he is often seen painting or sketching in the surrounding forest. It’s possible if you take a walk in the woods, you may meet him…

Perhaps, however, the most interesting thing about him is that he resides at Satis House, the estate featured in the famous, haunting Dickens’ novel, Great Expectations where the eccentric, reclusive Miss Havisham burnt to death. When Sage and her twin sister, Saffron, first visit the house, they have an otherworldly experience:

We finally broke through the overgrowth and Satis House loomed before us. It was dismal, derelict, gutted – old brick seemed to buckle under its own weight and many of the windows were boarded up; those that remained on the lower floor were behind rusted iron bars. Stones jutted at awkward angles and the balustrade was crumbling in places…”

Is Satis House just another Gothic ruin or is it a portal to another world? You can find out for yourself as it is possible to stay overnight at the newly-renovated hotel that was once this grand manor (that’s if you’re not afraid of encountering things that go bump in the night…)

Next on our tour is the British Museum. Filled with ancient artefacts, relics and mummies, the British Museum is a popular tourist destination, but it is here that Sage experiences her first paranormal incident. It’s no wonder too… the museum is a mysterious, spooky place where history resides within its walls. The lives of others make for interesting stories and, if you’re interested in history like I am, you can travel through time as you gaze upon the Rosetta Stone and statues of the Pharaohs, the Elgin Marbles taken from the Parthenon, and the Viking ship found buried at the Sutton Hoo…

If you follow Sage’s journey in the novel, the exhibits described in the museum can actually be viewed, such as the ‘cosmic map’ from ancient Mesopotamia.

This ‘cosmic map’ explains the Babylonian view of the mythological world and is part of the mystery that surrounds Sage’s quest. But what key does it hold to her future? If you’re interested in horoscopes, the Zodiac and astronomy, take a look at some of the exhibits at the British Museum, especially in the areas featuring artefacts from ancient Mesopotamia…

It is here that Sage first meets the young, enigmatic and alluring archaeologist (move over Indiana Jones), St. John Rivers. It is a meeting that will have surprising ramifications for Sage and, in turn, for humankind…

It was because I was so transfixed with my find that I initially failed to notice that I was being scrutinized from across the room. The first I became aware of it was a prickling sensation down my back, the hairs on my neck and arms raised giving me goose bumps. I turned my head round nervously, looking back over my shoulder … He stood at a distance, a young man in his mid-twenties perhaps, taller than average. No mere accident of lighting, his slightly curly locks, the colour of polished brass, formed a halo around a face that was much too beautiful to be called handsome. The only way to describe him was golden.”

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. This meeting and her discovery of the artefact leads Sage and St. John to the Louvre in Paris to track down more clues and information. But that’s not the only reason visitors come to Paris – they come for the food and the art and the romance, as Paris is not the City of Love and Lights for nothing:

The Musée du Louvre was garbed in Renaissance romanticism, its imposing façade now lovingly draped in the silvery tones of twilight – a fitting backdrop to accentuate its beauty. Shaped like an enormous horseshoe, the Louvre extended across the plaza’s expanse, folding its corners of open space and attempting to carry it all in its wings. The sheer majesty of its façade never failed to take away my breath…”

But the Louvre holds both menace as well as beauty, threat and the promise of reward…

Despite its surreal splendour, it is here in Paris that Sage encounters true evil … but it is St. John who saves her, finally revealing his true nature as a Nephilim.

As I watched carefully, barely daring to breathe, the shadows lengthened, flattening against the stone. St. John’s silhouette rose between us and from his shoulders unfurled the shadow of enormous wings, spreading, expanding till it reached the vaulted ceiling. Light radiated from him, around him, between us.”

Yet as the threat intensifies, sending Sage and St. John rush off to Vatican City and the ancient catacombs that lie beneath its serene façade:

“We entered into a tiny cavity and the glow of the torch brought a new dawn to its macabre décor. The arch was crafted from hundreds of skulls – mocking me with their silent laughter. Further in, I could see that vertebrae and femurs, some yellowed with age, formed grisly curlicues and fleur-de-lis on the ceiling of the chamber while the floor was patterned and enspelled in a cadaverous pentagram.”

This is modelled on the famous Capuchin Crypt under the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini – a cemetery and collection of six tiny chapels where everything, from the light fittings to the picture frames, were made from human bones. You may visit this macabre site … if you dare…

Pretty grotesque, right?

But we are whisked away from this gruesome place as Sage and St. John are then invited to attend a private conference at the Vatican Secret Archives, which is now open to the public for tours:

The Vatican Secret Archives were said to house approximately 35,000 volumes in an estimated eighty-four kilometres of shelving, supported by their own Photographic and Conservation Studios – something that both Fi and I would have envied. Amongst the many volumes in the Secret Archives was Henry VIII’s written request to the Holy See for his marriage to Catherine of Aragon to be annulled, the transcripts of the Inquisition, as well as letters written by Michelangelo.”

If you wish to explore or debunk some of the myths, rumours and secrets about the Vatican and the Catholic Church, here’s a good place to start. You don’t need to be Robert Langdon and Sophie Neveu to embark on a quest … and I’m certain there’s enough to intrigue the most avid conspiracy buff…

Lastly, our tour comes full circle. Raise a glass of champagne and count down the New Year in style as London’s calling…

Who knows? You too may meet a Nephilim or magician or vampire in this bustling metropolis with its curious blend of ancient traditions and modern customs…
