Excerpt:

Hyde Park
April 1806

Viola clutched the handle of her pink parasol to her chest tightly in anticipation of the spectacle to come. Her gaze fixed on the two figures shrouded in the early morning fog of Hyde Park. The men, really only boys, began to count as they paced away from each other. Shiny, pearl-handled pistols positioned in their right hands were at the ready.

She clamped her lips tight to suppress the giggle that threatened to escape.

Who would have thought that she, Lady Viola Oberbrook, would have two men seeking her hand in marriage...and in the first week of her very first season, no less? That they were the twin sons of Lord Haversham was an even greater coup de grǎce for her. She’d be the envy of every debutante. The talk of the town. As well she should be! Her father was the Duke of Liperton, after all.

If only she’d found a way to get all of London here to witness the duel. She’d done what she could by leaving word with Mrs. Tenchard. The old gossipmonger was sure to spread the word more quickly than Vi could spend her monthly allowance at the milliner’s shop.

And Vi prided herself on her ability to spend her father’s money.

“Miss Viola, beg’n yer pardon, but it be wise to don ye wool kid gloves,” her lady’s maid, Sarah, whispered beside her.

“Shhhh,” Vi hissed in return, raising her hand for Sarah to hold her tongue. She didn’t want to miss a single moment of what was to come. She would remember this for the rest of her existence. The day two men of the haute ton battled in her honor. She sighed.

The twins—Cody, with his hair cut longer than the current fashion permitted, and sporting a determined glint in his eye, and Winston, with his smartly trimmed blond hair falling respectfully above his collar—reached the required twenty-pace distance and turned.

Their pistols fired in unison. Vi’s heart soared. Her first duel...and certainly not her last, if she had anything to say in the matter.

The swift morning breeze pushed the smoke from the scene as both men dropped to the ground, soggy with morning dew. Shouts of urgency rang out in the air. Men rushed in to assist the twins.

A cold chill inched up her spine; her breath caught in her lungs.

Neither man moved.

A sharp inhale of breath sounded next to her, but Vi was hesitant to remove her attention from the scene as the pungent smell of a spent firearm reached her.

“Call Doc Durpentire. Post haste!” bellowed Mr. Rodney Swiftenberg. As a distant relative of the Havershams’, Swiftenberg stood as Cody’s second during the duel. Others, vaguely familiar, knelt over both fallen men.

The gossip rags would have much to write about this day. Vi could hardly wait to see her name in print. Maybe her father would increase her dowry, seeing as she would be in high demand by the day’s end.

“Miss,” Sarah called. “I think it best we be head’n home. Ye Pa is going to be right mad when he finds you snuck out and now these poor men be lying dead at ye very feet.”

“Surely you jest. They are simply play acting for dramatics...in my honor, I do suppose.” Viola eyed the two groups of men where they stood, their heads shaking in turn. One took his coat off and laid it gently over Cody’s still body. Vi’s glare snapped to Winston, where another man shook out a horse blanket. The thick, coarse material drifted on the morning breeze and settled on the second body.

She studied the scene in front of her. It had the potential to be ever so romantic. A story she would regale her grandchildren with. It was a shame neither twin was the first born and, therefore, unworthy of her hand. But she’d seen no reason to inform them of this minor issue and spoil her fun. They’d find out soon enough.

Slowly, the eyes of every person present settled on her. She took a step back at the harshness of their stares. Her chilled hand rose to cover her mouth. She wanted to tell them to avert their eyes; she was the daughter of a Duke. They need show the respect due her. None of these men held a title higher than Baron. How dare they look at her thus?

A tall, slender man carrying a large cloth bag rushed to Winston. She assumed this was Doc Durpentire. He would have both men patched up in no time. But with both Cody and Winston taking a bullet, their feud would not be resolved. Viola imagined what the pair would think up next to prove one deserved her hand over the other. Perhaps a curricle race through Mayfair District. She knew she would be able to convince Cody to let her ride along on the adventure. She could practically feel the wind against her face as the carriage took the corners at a high speed, shifting across the seat so that her soft body might come to rest against Cody’s hard one.

Imagine what the silly, empty-brained young females would think. They’d envy her further. An unbidden smile played across her lips.

The doctor drew the heavy blanket aside and his hands moved over Winston’s body. Then, they stilled. His head dropped forward. He spoke to the men around him, but Vi was too far to hear their conversation.

Rodney, hands shoved deep in his pockets, moved in her direction.

“Whatever is the matter with them?” she asked when he was close enough to hear.

“I think you should go, Lady Viola. This is not a scene any innocent maiden should witness,” Rodney replied. His blond hair was so much like Cody and Winston’s, but his attitude had always struck her as arrogant for a man with no title or wealth to speak of.

“Who are you to order me about?” Viola closed her parasol with a swift click and handed it to Sarah, her hands coming to rest on her rounded hips.

“It is not the time for this. My cousins...they are both dead.” Rodney paused. “I must alert my uncle to his misfortune.”

“You are mistaken.”

“I assure you, no mistakes have been made this day.” He abruptly turned, stalking back to the crowd gathering between the fallen men.

He must be jesting, Viola thought. She looked between the fallen pair again, their motionless bodies so at odds with the twins she’d come to know in recent days. The heat of exhilaration drained from her as a hand settled at her elbow. Viola felt the calloused fingertips through her thin morning cloak.

“We should be going, Miss.”

Vi shook Sarah’s imploring touch from her arm and tried to focus her gaze on something—anything—other than the lifeless men on the ground.

“Well,” Viola stated. “This was…” Dread clawed at her insides, and her spirit shattered as she stared at the two men lying prone and unmoving before her. “…unexpected.” Her entire life had been leading up to this moment—a life of societal demands and the rigors one had to follow to be accepted. A life that had just stopped, as quickly as those of the two men who now lay dead. Dead. She had murdered these men—the realization came at her all at once, even as her mind rebelled. Cody and Winston, the silly twins who had entertained her so, were no more. Yet, she continued to breathe. With each breath, standing in the chill of early morning in Hyde Park, she felt the obligations of her station, its standards and protocols too powerful for a seventeen-year-old girl to overcome.

She glanced around her for help, for someone to tell her what to do, but all focus was on the boys on the ground. Years of being taught how to behave hadn’t prepared her for anything like this.

“Miss, what should we do?”

“I suppose we should…” She cleared her throat. “I suppose it is time to start over.” She sensed, somehow, that starting over might be impossible.

“Start over, Miss?” Her maid’s dark brow pulled low over her eyes.

Viola straightened her already impeccably postured back and forced her prized smile before continuing. “To find another suitor, you silly girl! This time, I intend to set my sights a bit higher.” She spun on her heels, determined not to stumble, to not falter before so many. She started back towards her carriage, moving through the men without meeting anyone’s eye,  feeling the weight of their stares as she passed. It didn’t matter. She had the evening’s entertainments to prepare for and an image to uphold—no matter the cost to her soul.

Book Description

An invisible wall built from the tears of those touched by death

An impossible love as divided as the world around them.

After Addison finds a nearly-dusted vampire in the garbage outside her building, her ability to stay off the supernatural world’s radar is deader than the vamp. Almost as dead as she’ll be if anyone thinks she put him there. Should she finish the job somebody else screwed up or move him somewhere humans won’t find him? To keep the Heights hidden, she may have shoved a stake into her own chest. Just when she thinks her life couldn’t possibly get any more dangerous, she finds out who he is.

As vampire king and Prime to all supernatural beings in the North American zone, Rhyse is accustomed to getting what he wants without asking. But he neither wanted nor asked to be wounded in an ambush, waking up chained to a bed with a hole in his chest. Unfortunately, he needs help to discover who tried to kill him. But worse than that, his only ally is his captor, someone unaware she has the power to destroy their entire world.

As a prophesized war brews in the Heights, Addison and Rhyse must decide which carries more risk—trusting someone who could destroy you or trusting someone who could love you?

Excerpt:

Addison backed up until she hit the counter. It was over. It had been over ever since those chains came off. Ever since she brought him into her apartment. Into her life.

“I saved you. I could’ve left you outside until the sun came up.”

“I imagine you wish you had.”

“Can you…can you not kill me? Just take some, but not all?”

Rhyse brushed her hair behind her shoulder and curled his fingers around the nape of her neck, whispering, “Do you trust me that much?”

“I don’t even trust you a little.” She felt the sting of tears. “I don’t want to be turned. If you drain me, let me die.”

He ran his other hand up her shoulder, to her throat and slowly closed his fingers around it. One move and her neck would break. “To drain you I would have to drink from you. And that, my pet, I will not do.”

She didn’t know what he meant but now seemed like a bad time to argue.

“Did you know what you are? How many of you exist?”

She didn’t answer. Partially because speaking required the air he was cutting off. Then his hands were gone, just like the rest of him.

Was it over?

When one of the women behind the counter moaned, Addison went to make sure they were alright.

Rhyse was on top of one of them, his fangs obviously burrowed in her neck. The woman moaned again, her legs wrapping around him. One hand clutched his shoulder and the other slapped the wall, searching for a hold.

It had to have been shock that made it impossible to look away. Or run away. The woman’s moans got louder, then crested, and her body went limp. Not in a dead way, but in an I-just-had-the-best-orgasm-of-my-life way.

Get out of here.

“Leave and they will die.” His voice stopped her after only two steps. “Stay and they will wake up from a very pleasant, very erotic dream.”

She grinded her teeth when she heard another moan. He must have moved on to the other woman. With two to feed from, there was less of a chance he would drain them, but… “Why should I trust you?”

The woman’s moans stopped and she whined, “No.”

“I do not care if you trust me,” he said. “Only that you obey me.”

“Fuck you.” But she didn’t move. “Are they alive?”

“Of course. It is against the law to kill humans.”

“Then let me go.”

“You are not human, Addison.” His voice came from just over her shoulder.

“I am. I promise. Totally human.” Somehow he’d missed the fact that seers were human, despite her telling him at least five times.

She heard the shuffling of fabric and looked down to see him wrapping his already-bloody shirt around the arm she’d cut. He tied a knot with the sleeves and pulled it tight. There was no part of this that she understood.

She sucked in a breath when he put his hands on her hipbones. Then another as they slid to her belly and down, pressing her back into him. She felt his heat and a vibration on her back as he made a sound similar to a cat’s purr but scarier. Clenching her eyes shut, she waited for death.

“You should thank them.” His voice was all sex. Dangerous, risky, awesome sex. “They just saved your life.”

They did? “Thank you,” she called out with a shaking voice. “Now that your belly’s full, how about you back off a little?”

“I should kill you, Addison.”

“I’m going to have to disagree with you about that.”

EXCERPT:

FREAKQUENCY – CADDELL BROWN – ©Copyright 2013

"In other entertainment news, after two months of rumor and speculation, international pop star Rick Chamberland filed suit against British gossip rag, PopStarPress, for libel. The suit is regarding his alleged involvement in the murder of twenty-one year old Chastity Wilson, an Oxford University student whose body was found in a downtown London hotel—the same hotel housed the singer, as well as his entire entourage, following one of Chamberland's concerts. Wilson was one of three fans who won an opportunity to meet the superstar backstage. Many have speculated that Wilson not only met Chamberland backstage, but accompanied him to his hotel after the show. Notorious for his party-boy image, Chamberland denied ever meeting privately with Wilson, although there is footage of them together backstage at a fan meet-and-greet. Early this morning, he was seen at Heathrow boarding a flight back to the United States after performing last night at a world AIDS benefit for her majesty, the Queen."

Rick woke from a nap, having drifted in and out of sleep as the jet soared into the air. The sounds of his team, management, and the jet’s crew once a faded rumble as he slept, now soared dramatically. He heard the deep bass voice of his manager Arnie from behind. The other members of his team: his stylist, Maddie, and her assistant, Jett, spoke in hushed tones. They were seated across from Rick and had maintained a quieter voice unlike his manager. But their conversation stalled at the sound of the newscast that blared loudly from Jett’s device. It was this sudden eruption that woke him. He sat up in the seat, stretching, yawning.

“What’s up?” He asked Maddie , but looked to Jett , who attempted to hide the screen of the computer.

“Sorry to wake you, Rick. Jett and I were trying to sync my laptop to her iPad to exchange some sketches she conjured for the American leg of your tour. We got side-tracked with a blog-site. Apparently, you’re dating again.”

“Dating?” Rick sat forward. He looked to the front of the jet and motioned for the flight attendant. “Who am I attached to now?”

The attendant approached holding a tumbler with ice. She fixed his drink. He watched her pour. She smiled at him and held his gaze a little too long. He smiled back. She was a pretty lady with red hair.

“Former Teen-star, Courtney Hynes.” Maddie said.

Rick looked over. “What? That’s ridiculous. She’s nuts. So I hear.”

“Indeed.” Maddie answered.

Rick took the drink from the attendant and sipped then slurped the vodka tonic. He nodded his approval to the attendant. She backed away, leaving. He watched the sway of her hips as she moved along the aisle. He wondered if there would be time later to visit with the attendant. The interest was there and he was always up for a good time. He drank again, allowing the smooth tonic to soothe his throat.

“There was something else.” He remembered now while wiping his eyes. Maddie and Jett had begun to speak again. “What was that other thing about the police and my show? Did something happen?” He saw Jett put the device away into a holder. He met her gaze, black-rimmed blue eyes. She smiled and seemed about to answer before Maddie cut him off.

“Something did happen after your show, but it’s not something I should speak to you about. Arnie.” Maddie nodded to the back of the jet. “I’m sure he’ll inform you.”

Lead formed in his stomach. He swallowed a long draught, topping off the cocktail and motioned to the attendant for another. He got up from his seat, stretched again and turned to his manager who sat waiting, with a cell phone pressed to his chest and a sour look on his face.

“Is it that bad?” Rick asked Maddie though he looked to Arnie. Arnie’s face was huge. He was a big guy. His jowls fluttered as he blew out a breath. “What, I can’t take a nap and wake up to good news for once?”, Rick asked no one as he began to make his way to the back. He fell into the seat opposite Arnie and waited for the attendant to pour another drink for him before readying himself for bad news. Something was always happening with his fans, but he usually found out after the fact. Arnie and the rest of his team tried their best to shield him from the bad so that he could focus on performing. Since retiring his mother as his manager his “luck” had been equal parts good and bad.

“Leave the bottle.” He touched the attendant’s hand. “What’s happened now?” He asked his manager. Arnie sighed, shook his head and began to explain the news Maddie and Jett had tried to conceal.

As a rule of thumb he tried not to watch the news or read the gossip pages. He didn't want to see himself in the light that others saw him. Even with this latest news of a murder of a woman who had been present at his concert, he wanted to hear nothing more than necessary. Did he personally know the victim? No. Had he met her backstage that night? Yes, along with a number of other adoring female fans. Had she come with him back to his hotel room? Yes. Had he killed her? No way. It was a ridiculous assumption.

“Was she the only one with you?” Arnie asked, summing up the series of questions that needed to be asked.

“No. Yes. I . . . I don’t know.” Rick answered while reflecting back on that night. Drunk on the finest champagne, he more than likely seduced the young miss, took her to bed in an additional suite — not the official one for him and his entourage, naturally — and fucked her into oblivion. Waking the next day, he would find her sleeping and in true rockstar form, he would step out without waking her to say goodbye. That was his standard modus operandi when picking up groupies after shows. He could only assume that’s what happened in London.

“She was found in the suite with a large amount of blood and viscera on the bed and walls and floor of the room. It was a very gruesome sight.” Arnie said.

“Am I gonna be arrested?”

“No, no. I’ve spoken to the police. Apparently there were a number of females in your room and a couple of males all from an after-party. Tony there found you the next day in your hotel room still asleep.” Arnie motioned to the left to one of Rick’s bodyguards. “Tony can vouch for you. The whole situation is crazy but you know, your fans are crazy. Poor girl.” Arnie shook his head. His phone rang. Arnie answered. Rick drained the last of his drink. Arnie handed the phone over.

"Your mother." He rose, elevated the seat to an upright position, and took the phone.

"Hello?"

"Rick, baby, is that you?"

"Ma."

"Well, hello to you too. What has it been now, almost a week since I heard from you? Won't you call and check on your poor Mama sometime?"

"You're anything but poor. I'm sorry I haven’t spoken to you. I've been very busy. Touring." He rubbed sleep from his eyes, feeling a slight annoyance at the call. He wanted to continue the discussion with Arnie and plan how to make the bad publicity go away; especially before his mother would hear about it. Poor girl, indeed. Poor me, Rick thought.

"You need to come home."

"Why?"

"Buster died. You need to be here for the funeral. Now Arnie told me you're on your way back to the States. Change your flight so you can come home."

"Buster died? How? When?"

"It was his heart. Those damn pills. I think he knew I put them in his food, so he stopped eating, would scrounge around in the garbage after dinner and eat our leftovers. I didn't find out until a couple days later; one of the cleaning girls found him out back, told Lucretia and she told me."

"Listen, I'm sorry to hear that Buster died. I'm sorry about that. He'll be missed. But I have two shows lined up as soon as I land. What with rehearsals and all I don't think I can make it—"

"You can spare some time out of your busy schedule for Buster. I won't hear no to this. I mean it. He was such a good dog and your only real friend growing up. Show a little respect and bring your butt home."

"All right, all right." He agreed with an exasperated tone, glad for the distraction from his latest troubles. “When do we bury him?”

"As soon as you get here."

"Fine, I'll switch my flight once I land in New York."

"Good. After all I've done for you, don't you dare ever say no to me, young man. All the riches you got coming your way are because of me and don't you forget it."

Guest Post & Giveaway: State of Infection by Michael J. Frey

Guest Post by Michael J. Frey
Writer Ideas

With so many books out there, I am sometimes asked, How Do You Keep Your Writing Different? It’s hard to stand out in a sea of new books. It’s not easy to pull off a novel which is acceptable to publishers but which is different enough to stand out to the reader. In my experience publishers and editors like a little flavor, not too much mind you, but enough to spice it up.

Let me start with the not-so-spicy. Grammar is important. No one will take you seriously if your grammar stinks. If your grammar does stink, consider a refresher by way of a book (ex: The Elements Of Style) or online course. Even if you have the greatest novel in the history of the world, no one will publish it if you don’t use proper grammar.  I could never begin to call myself a grammar expert but I will suggest a few basic concepts that are very important to creative writing. First, begin sentences with subject noun before the verb, making meaning early (if at all possible). Use strong verbs. Try to avoid words ending in –ing. People are often confused about sentence length and what is appropriate. I think long sentences are fine but you should consider mixing them up with short sentences. That way it’s not boring or hard to read. For more technical areas, keep sentences short.

Word choice is a way to spice your story. Writing interesting sentences can be a draw to your novel. Some writers like to use slang words. I think this is a great spice to add (though the grammar police might disagree). Say you’re not a slang expert, try wordspy.com. They have an extensive list of fun new slang expressions which you can work into your story. If done carefully, adding the occasional foreign word can spice it up too. Beware, some folks hate to read foreign words, but if added only in the tiniest degree, it can be a fun addition. Ditto on curse words. There are also advanced concepts like homilies, and internal repetition but that is a bit beyond the scope of this blog.

I think throwing in CAPITAL letters is a fun way to express ideas without putting exclamation points everywhere! Ditto the use of italics to stress the expression of certain words in a sentence.

When proofreading your work, always read it over twice. Once out loud, once to yourself. All writers have heard the expression, ‘Kill your darlings.’ After your first draft is completed, go through the manuscript and kill off all extra, unwanted words. Also try to avoid using the same word over and over again. Keep “same” words separate by at least one paragraph if possible. Also if at all possible, reject all cliché sentences.

Anyway, these are just some tricks I use when writing. Again, I’m not an expert, but this is what I’ve come up with so far. Hope you enjoy State of Infection and thanks for reading this blog.

Wolfpack Delta gave Ryden Coulter’s life purpose after the attack that not only changed his life, but destroyed his only hope for happiness. While the woman he left behind is always on his mind, he knows that his new-found strength lies in the power of his wolf, not in his heart…or so he thinks.

Being born for the sole purpose of saving another’s life isn’t quite the way one imagines coming into the world, but Carlee O’Shannon knows no other reality. The one time she ever opened her heart, she lost it all. Vowing to never let another person hurt her that way again, she’s unprepared for Ryden to come back into her life.

Together again, out of necessity rather than desire, Ryden and Carlee will be forced to fight not only for their lives, but the lives of Ryden’s unit. Secrets and danger lurk beneath the surface, and it will take more than the strength of a lone wolf and the woman he loves to fight their way out.

Excerpt:

Opening the wide bay doors, Ryden dropped his bag just inside and walked to the covered car, removing the tarp and tossing it into the back corner of the room. He paid the owner of the storage facility well to make sure the sleek beauty was always gassed up, and running at peak performance so that whenever Ryden was back home, he could just get in and drive.

Running his fingers across the glass-like surface, he appreciated yet again the beauty of the car. Eagerly, he grabbed the key from inside the door, tossed his bags in the back and started the classic car, and immediately heard the rumble of American muscle under the hood.

A broad smile spread across Ryden’s face as he felt the steady vibration of the car beneath him. He put it in drive and left the bay without even bothering to close and lock the door. There was nothing else in the bay, so it didn’t matter. All Ryden owned was the car and the few personal belongings, meager as they were, tossed in the back seat.

As he drove out of the city, making his way north on I-95 for the forty-five minute drive to Baltimore, his thoughts once again turned to his past and what he’d had to leave behind. Too many memories he wished he could forget, but knew would be a part of him for the rest of his life, a life that could turn out to be much longer than that of the average man driving down the interstate alongside him.

Had it not been for two men in particular who helped pull him back from the brink and put him on the right path at the age of sixteen, Ryden wondered how much worse it could have been. Now, many years later and on his way to see those two very same men, both retired and living the peaceful life, he hoped they were proud of the man that he had become.

About the Authors:

Cam Cassidy

Cam Cassidy is an erotic romance author with a paranormal flare.  She spent her life growing up in a small Ohio farming community.  The lack of neighbors and companionship of mostly cows and horses in her youth left her plenty of time for her passion of reading to flourish.

As an adult, Cam is married and the mother of three ornery children who keep her on her toes.  The cup of coffee in her hand is a trademark.   She works full time in the medical field.  In her spare time,  she spends every minute reading and writing.  Watching her children ride horses, dirt bikes with a notebook in hand to never miss jotting down that next all important story idea.

All of the "hard work" reading and writing sitting beside the fire drinking a glass of wine.  Or was it between loads of laundry, recently paid off with her first publication.

Ruelle Channing

Ruelle Channing is a writer of Paranormal Romance. She grew up in a small North Carolina community with books as her best friend. Often as a child, she was scolded for propping up her book to read while she did her chores, even while her mother encouraged the interest. After graduation from high school, Ruelle worked in a sewing factory. She married at age 21 and had the first of three daughters two years later. Her girls have also inherited the love of reading. Prologue

Have you ever wondered about the universe?  How was it created?  What is the purpose of it all?

Well, the answers may surprise you.

Actually, there are a lot of universes out there.  They come in every size and shape and flavor you can imagine.  And the answers to your questions are very different, depending on which universe you are in.

Some of those universes are amazing.  They are full of beautiful planets, intelligent races, technological marvels, and other wonders.  And some of them are not so amazing.  Each universe is created by a God, of course, as is required for such things.  But one of the inconvenient truths is that not all Gods are created equal.  Oh, they have the best teachers and the best education possible, of course.  And over the ages, the Gods have developed a decent work ethic and a strong desire to do the best they can.  But Gods are pretty much like everyone else.  They have their own share of overachievers and underachievers, motivated and unmotivated, talented and not-so-talented, and so on.  And that explains why some of the universes out there are not really up to professional standards.

This is a story about those Gods.  They live in The Town, on a planet called The World.  They call themselves The People.  And their primary occupation is building universes, which they call The Business.  You needn’t be much concerned about their lack of creativity in naming things.  They all live in the same town on the same planet.  And there isn’t anyone else in the God Business, so they don’t need a lot of fancy names to differentiate these things.

No one really remembers how they got in The Business.  They have been doing it as far back as anyone can recall.  And they will always be doing it.  It is just one of those things Gods do.  It isn’t like they can just quit The Business and go do something else.  And since it is the only thing they will ever do, one of the ways they make it fun is to see how well they can do it.

One of the main ways the Gods have fun, and their only real competition on The World, is the Annual Universe Awards.  This is when The Committee looks over the new universes to see if anyone has come up with something worthy of an award.  After all these millennia, there is an award for almost every category you can imagine.  The trick is to be better than the God who won that category last time.  So if you are going for the Most Beautiful Planet, and there have been forty-seven winners before you, each one more beautiful than the last, you have to be really exceptional if you want to become winner number forty-eight.  But the competition is everyone’s favorite event, and The People work very hard to outdo each other.  This is the best and fastest way to gain recognition for your work.

Not every God is cut out to be a Builder, of course.  Some of The People are better at other things.  This is good, because The Town needs cooks and librarians and plumbers and all manner of other professions as well.  In school, everyone has a chance to become a Builder, but as the classes keep getting harder and more challenging, there are more and more reasons to change your major to something else.

To help you understand about The World, we’ll take a look at an ordinary boy.  He isn’t the smartest, although he isn’t dumb.  He certainly didn’t distinguish himself in school, unless you count his reputation for being picked on more than most kids.  He had few friends, perhaps because he came from a broken home.  His mom worked hard to raise him the way he should be raised, but after the divorce, it was a struggle to make ends meet.  Our boy’s only claim to fame is his dad, who won three Universe Awards and become a major celebrity all over The World.

We take you to our young God at a special time in his life.  He has just finished school and is about to start his first job.  It is an exciting time to be sure…

Blog Tour Guest Post & Giveaway Aflame by Krissy Daniels

Guest Post
by Krissy Daniels

Thank you so much for having me. Yay! This is my very first guest post. Aflame is my first book. And I’m writing this after receiving my first not-so-nice review. But never mind that. In honor of all these firsts, I’d like to talk about an important first in a girls life as well as in any romance novel.

Get your minds out of the gutter. I’m not talking about the mattress mambo. I’m talking about the first kiss. And no, not the one that happened in middle school where you smashed lips against your crush-of-the-week behind the bleachers, or in the basement of Jimmy What’s-His-Name during a game of Spin the Bottle.

I’m talking about that smooch that made your toes curl. That kiss that made you, for the first time, feel like a W.O.M.A.N. That first lip-lock with a real man. Do you remember yours? I do. Man, oh man, do I ever. There’s never been another like it, and every time I write or read a first-kiss scene, I’m sucked back to that one night and that one kiss that I will forever measure all other kisses against.

Mine looked something like this. No joke. Brick wall, rain and all.

And suddenly I was no longer the timid little girl.

For days and days, I felt like this.

Thats the beauty of romance. We can go back to these special moments in time over and over. We get to experience them through someone else’s eyes. Although in every book, the scene, the dialogue, the mood and actions are different, the reader gets to relive the special memories, the thrills, and the emotion.

For a small period of time, we’re that twenty-something girl again blossoming into a full-blown, sensual woman. How freakin’ cool is that?

To save her soul, he’ll let her burn.

Grayce has been on the run for years. Having escaped an abusive relationship with a violent psychopath, she is trying to rebuild her life one small step at a time. Things are going well until Zander crosses her path, badass and sexy as hell. His presence awakens heated desires she long ago buried. Last thing Grayce wants is a man, and the way her body reacts to Zander scares her more than the threat of being found.

Tyr will do anything to get his little dove back. She is a Beacon, and her raw, burning energy gives him power and strength. More than the evil that already compels him. But a blond giant of a man hovers protectively around her. No matter. He’ll play with him too.

When Zander rescues Grayce from Tyr’s first attempt to reclaim her, he reveals his superhuman abilities. Power that Grayce also has, but has yet to understand. As predestined soul mates, Zander must help Grace control her rage before her fire threatens to destroy everyone and everything in her path. But his true challenge is more than that—to show her it’s possible to trust and love again.

Excerpt:

With bare hands splayed across the open wounds, Grayce squeezed her eyes closed and prayed for control. Begged. Pleaded to a God she’d never before acknowledged.

Chelsea needed time to get away.

Grayce prayed for Chelsea, prayed for Zander. Prayed they wouldn’t die because of her.

Her wits slipped away. Raw emotion drove her actions now. Blood covered her arms. Her lips throbbed with the remnants of his kiss. A kiss that felt like goodbye. He couldn’t die. The primal need to protect him overwhelmed her senses.

“Take me,” she implored. “Take me instead.”

Hell’s own fire coursed through her veins. Savage. Brutal. Pissed off.

She would’ve sold her soul at that moment to keep him alive. Zander didn’t deserve this. She did.

Earth and grass swirled and gyrated, turned to ash around her. Her small fingers stretched across his bloodied and shredded skin. Her insides boiled. Her skin bubbled and vibrated with indignant protest.

He said he loved her, now he was dying. Why? What kind of cruel, sadistic joke was this, anyway? Violent trembles overtook her as an earthquake made its way through her body from the inside out.

“I will not let you die.”

When Allison is asked to play Cinderella-turned-Fiancee at a Halloween ball, the last thing she expects is to be accused of murder. She has to find the killer and quick, or she'll be put to death for the crimes she didn't commit. To make matters worse, the victims are all werewolves.

On the short list of potential victims, Allison has to act fast, or the killer will have one more body to add to his little black book of corpses.

There's only one problem: One of the deaths has struck too close to home, and Allison's desire for self-preservation may very well transform into a quest for vengeance...

EXCERPT

It was well enough our ‘relationship’ was nothing more than make-believe. Our friendship wasn’t much better off, either. Unfortunately, Mark didn’t know that. I shook my head to clear it, staring down at my watch.

3:59 pm.

I glanced eastward, at the glass-lined wall of the jewelry store I was in. Shoppers hurried about their business in the broad mall hallways, chatting to each other or talking on their too-expensive cell phones. Beyond the walls of the building, I could already feel the moon calling to me, birthing shivers under my skin. In a little over an hour, it would start to rise. I made a thoughtful sound, turning my attention back to the glass case in front of me.

It was a full moon on Halloween. Some people would don masks, confident in their superiority as a human, never realizing how close they’d tread to a very violent and bloody end. Others would remove the masks they normally hid behind, rejoicing in their one night of freedom.

A sad few would have no idea what horrors they had sowed come morning.
I was in a lot of trouble. My fellow boogeymen didn’t frighten me all that much. It was Mark who worried me. Mark, as well as the other humans he’d subject me to before the night was done. I hadn’t lost control in years — I doubted Mark’s mother had been born since the last time it’d happened.

But that didn’t change the fact that it could happen.

Old or not, I was still a bitch. Without pack or mate, it was only a matter of time before I lost control.

Mark wouldn’t stand a chance, and when I finally lost my grip on sanity, I wouldn’t even remember killing him. Why hadn’t I said no? Why had I agreed to travel to New York on Halloween? What had I been thinking?

I hadn’t been, and that was a big problem.

“Is there something I can help you with, miss?” A woman asked from beside me. I about jumped out of my skin.

Shit. I swallowed back my heart and improvised. Without really seeing the jewelry beneath the glass, I pointed at something shiny, and hoped it was a necklace. “May I see that please?”

“That’s a very expensive piece, ma’am.”

I glanced at the woman out of the corner of my eye. A pastel pink blazer was matched with a pencil skirt that showed off thin legs and knee-high black boots. Glittering bracelets clung to her wrists. “Is that so,” I murmured, focusing my attention on the piece I pointed at.

Rubies and diamonds winked at me, woven together in a Celtic knot trapped in the center of a web of delicate diamond-encrusted chains. My cheek twitched.
No wonder the woman was skeptical and eying me suspiciously. Here I was, in some luxury jewelry store poking around to waste time, dressed in a beat-up leather coat, a baggy sweater, and worn jeans, complete with mud splatter from my walk in Central park. As my luck had it, I pointed out a necklace worth more than any car or house I’d ever seen in person, let alone owned.

I felt the eyes of every customer in the store settle on me. Great. Just what I needed.

An audience.

Maybe I should’ve acted more indignant. Maybe I should’ve walked away. Instead, I took out my wallet, pulled out my black platinum Amex card, and tossed it on the counter. “May I see that please?”

The sales woman stared at the card and then at me, her eyes narrowing. “Do you really think I’m going to believe this is your card?”

Half of the customers in the store cleared out in the time it took the sales woman to pick up my card.

“Is there a problem?” A man dressed in a business suit stepped forward. His blue eyes took in my clothes before settling on the black credit card in his coworker’s hand.
The woman glared down her nose at me, her gaze settling on my beat-up jacket. “I do believe we have a stolen credit card here, sir.”

The manager snatched my credit card. “Is this true, miss?”

Oh hell no. I felt my cheek twitch again. “It’s not. I’ll just take my card to a different store, then.”

“I think this can be resolved quickly and easily, miss,” the man replied. He frowned at me. “Can I see your ID please?”

I showed him my license. The manager winced. “I’m sorry, there have been a lot of theft of valuable jewelry lately by those with fraudulent credit cards and out of state driver’s licenses. This will only take a few minutes as I verify this is a real card.”

Well, at least he wasn’t going to call the police on me right away. I sighed. “Since when hasn’t my driver’s license been sufficient proof? What is this? LA?”

Release Day Spotlight: Francesca of Lost Nation by Lucinda Sue Crosby

Title: Francesca of Lost Nation
Author: Lucinda Sue Crosby
Genre: Romantic Suspense

Winner of Four Literary Prizes / Author selected as one of “50 Authors You Should be Reading” by The Authors Show online media outlet

This family saga is “funny at times and filled with little pearls of everyday wisdom, it is as much a romantic thriller as it is a perfect little capsule of a time gone by. It is a book about love of all kinds - between grandmother and child, between child and dog, between man and woman.”

If you like Old Fashioned Romance Reads similar to Norah Roberts or Kristin Hanna for kindle, you will want to add this one to your collection:

Here's a little about the story:

When a mysterious man named Matthew appears in the small Iowa town of Lost Nation, his sudden arrival raises questions about his past. Quiet with an apparent taste for rum, Matthew makes it clear he doesn’t want to make friends. He isn’t too pleased to be dropped off at Home Farm where the independent and eccentric Francesca doesn’t accept bad manners or booze binges.

Matthew doesn’t want to form personal ties and intends to move on as soon as his damaged leg from a recent plane crash heals. But a series of events draw him into reluctant relationships: One with the feisty Francesca, the second with her 10-year-old granddaughter Sarah.

In spite of her own reservations, Francesca finds herself falling for this brooding pilot but his past looms between the pair and what neither knows is that Sarah, Francesca's 10-year-old granddaughter, has encountered a stranger of her own ... leading to a climatic confrontation that will put her and her grandmother’s life in danger.

Those that enjoy family sagas or family drama will also embrace this story

There are plenty of eccentric characters, including Francesca who is quirky and full of secrets – she keeps the town gossips busy. There are some dramatic family dynamics that cause tension and uneasiness at times. Because the story is told through the wide-eyed 10-year-old Sarah, this romance mystery is humorous at times.

Readers love this kindle romance fiction, because it has a touch of everything: friendship, humor, romance, adventure and mystery.

Book Spotlight: Struggles of the Women Folk by T.M. Brown

Genres:
African American fiction,
historical fiction,

Themes:
 family dynamics,
romance,
perseverance (sp)

"Struggles of the Women Folk" is based on fictional characters created from stories my grandma shared with me when I was child.  It is the story of Georgie, a young Black girl in the South during the 1940s. I hope that you can appreciate her pain, suffering and betrayal as you travel with her on highs and lows you won't anticipate. This is the story of the power of a woman's courage, love, strength and faith that exists within each and every one us, whether we know it or not..

Excerpt:
Sissy knew she wasn’t pretty, cuz erbody told her so! She had all dem black features that erbody thought was ugly: dark skin, short nappy hair, big eyes, big lips, huge breast and a big butt. None of that mattered to me, cuz she was not just my cousin; she was my best friend.
Her momma and mine couldn’t stand each other, but we didn’t care.
We’d been friends for as long as I could remember. Every day, we walked the five miles to the little shack we called skool, carrying our books and lunch pails. Momma would always have something special in my pail. There would be bread, cheese, jelly and sometimes even a slice of homemade cake. Sissy never had anything good. Most times, she only had a piece of bread or some leftover salt pork.
“Ain’t got no money to be spending on some ugly thang like you,” her momma would say. Her momma hated her. Folks say it was because she didn’t know who Sissy’s daddy was. Her momma was walking home one night when some men jumped her in the woods and made her ‘with child’. That’s what the folks called it in 1944. No one used words like pregnant, at least, not the good girls.
