About Rick Chiantaretto

1005771_573547986029946_976679398_n

I've often been accused of having done more in my life than the average 30 year old, but if I were completely honest I'd have to tell you my secret: I'm really 392.

 So after all this time, I'm a pretty crappy writer.

I have one book published but out of print, one coming out soon, and a bunch half written (when you have eternity, where's the reason to rush?). I've been favorably reviewed by horror greats like Nancy Kilpatrick, and my how-to-write-horror articles have been quoted in scholarly (aka community college freshmen's) papers.

 I enjoy the occasional Bloody Mary, although a Bloody Kathy or Susan will suffice. Mostly, I just try to keep a low profile so people don't figure out who I REALLY am.

Author Interview & Giveaway: Bound to You by K.A. M’Lady

About the Author:

Author K.A. M’Lady lives a few stone throws from corn fields, chaos and congestion; all lying on the outskirts of the many burbs of Chicago. KA M'lady spends her days calculating life expectancies, mortality and the certainty of death and taxes while in her free time the dead wander freely, buy shoes, homes, the occasional odd business or two and, if you even think of charging them too much in taxes…well, let’s just say the tax man may never come back. But if he does he might just shamble a bit.

An All Romance eBooks bestselling author, K.A. M'lady's work has been described as scary, descriptive, beautiful, dark, frightening, addictive, sexy and believable. She loves to read paranormal romances, watching horror movies, westerns on Sundays with her husband, playing fetch with her pocket beagle, Chevy and buying weird shoes. Her friends call her eccentric, her family refuses to comment. She’s been lost in the world of fiction since she was a small child, and frankly, never wants to be found—at least not any time soon. “Myth and magic builds dreams and inspirations – and in an insane world, it is our dreams that spark the revolution of change. No matter which world is being conquered. Within our dreams – all things are possible.”

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

I usually always have the idea for the beginning, the middle and how the story ends, where that beginning takes us I tend to let flow as I write.  I've tried to plot my stories, do an outline, but it seems that when I get to certain points, I can almost see my characters look back at me and question me.  Some, laughingly.  It's never pleasant when the voices in your head mock your story line.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

It's definitely more fun to give my characters a certain amount of free reign.  I think it's part of the journey as an author and for the story itself.  Sometimes I'm just as excited where the story is taking us as the readers are.  Even I get those 'didn't see that coming' moment from time to time.

What is your favourite food?

I'm probably the worst person to ask this question since I can't eat anything I like due to chronic migraines.  If it's on the trigger list, I can't eat it or drink it.  On the plus side this makes me a cheap date for my husband -  lol!  But, if I had to pick one food it would definitely be pizza.  I could eat it every day, every meal; stuffed, or not, thin crust or thick, hand-tossed or pan, flowing over with extra cheese, and extra sauce.  I want it dripping, gooey, sloppy and greasy with Italian sausage, pepperoni and mushrooms.  Hungry?  Yeah, me too :)  Too bad eating it would require a dose of meds. and the lingering effects of a brain melt.  But, my heart and health will thank me for not eating it.  Some days though it's just so worth the premedicated dose.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

I would say I'm an early riser; which is completely the opposite of being a morning person.  If want you to speak to me before I've had at least a half pot of coffee, it might be lethal.  And, because I work so much, I'm not likely to make it to the late news.  I'd say I do my best thinking during the weather report; my dog curled on the floor next to me, the husband keeping me company into the wee hours of the night.  The couch tends to become my comfy spot until I finally trudge off to bed.

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?

I would love to go to Scotland and Ireland.  The history and beauty of both countries has always captivated me.

Do distant places feature in your books?

Sometimes.  I try not to limit myself when it comes to what I write about.  Whether it's historical time-travel or sci-fi, or fantasy romance, I think we're only limited by the boundaries we give ourselves.  We can go anywhere we want to in the worlds we write about - why not reach for the stars.

Do you listen to music while writing?

There is usually something always on -  background noise, but I tend to tune everything out when I'm writing.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

My latest trilogy, the Vranthian Vampires is a series about three brothers who must find a cure to a disease that is plaguing their planet.  Secrets, murder and ancient histories fill their culture with the whispered rumors of rebel forces seeking to destroy everything they hold dear, magical curatives in the bloodlines of races they've fought to decimate, familial lies and betrayals.  And the hope that the ancient ritual of the trion can save their race and set them free before The Wasting destroys the all.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

I've met some amazing people since I've started this career and I've learned more than I could probably list in a short amount of space.  There is so much more to writing than just telling a story.  These things take time  - like the growth of a child or a seedling.  But the beauty of it is in watching it grow and become something.  From the opening line, to the cover reveal to the big release.  The entire process is thrilling and awe-inspiring and takes a ton of work.  None of it would be possible without all of the people in the background; editors, artists, reviewers, bloggers and readers that love the craft as much as I do.  That's why we read and why we write.

Is there anything you would do differently?

None of it.  Like anything else in life the curves and bumps along the way are there for their purpose.  Sometimes it's to teach us something.  Other times they're there for us to help others learn something along the way.  We've all our road to travel.

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?

I think there is something from every author I read that influences me.  A bit of life thrown in that stirs the words.  We use a piece of our personality in each of our characters, an idea or a darkness that lurks somewhere within us that get spread along the page.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

Learn everything you can about the genre you intend to write and then learn some more.  Research your markets, your publishers and your pay.  Read everything.  Then throw it out the window and follow your gut.  It's seldom wrong.  Yes, you'll still need to do your research and your marketing, your promo and every minute detail to do this job.  It's work.  But you know when you need to ask questions and you know when you need more edits.  Commas are a killer!  It's when you stop asking those questions that you've probably lost your way.

What are three words that describe you?

Capable
Determined
Quirky

I really hate questions like these.  Are three words ever really enough?  And how do you narrow it down?  My youngest recently told me I was a hot mess.  That made me laugh.  I am who I am.  I love my friends and family.  I hate the word no - it makes me want to prove you wrong.  (That's the capable and determined thing.)  And I like weird shoes, off-beat clothes and snow.  Lots of it!  And I'm not too fond of summer.  (Quirky)

What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?

The one book I'm anxiously awaiting the release of is the third book in the King Killer Chronicles by Patrick Rothfus.  He is an amazing story teller.  As far as authors, there are just too many to count.  The list is long and endless and ranges from paranormal authors to historical authors, poets and horror novelists.  And, with books being available at the touch of a button this is the best time to be a reader.  You can finish one and instantly have another within seconds, all from the comfort of your home and every tree spared.

This is an excerpt from Bound To You -  Prince Draven confronts the Darengy warrior, Ook, knowing their futures are tied together.  Are either prepared for what that future will bring?

      Bound To You by K.A.  M'Lady

 "If you wish to regain her, you must return to whence she came from." The voice startled Draven with its dulcet tones and soft rumble in the wake of the chaos that roared through his mind. He turned.

 Ook, the Darengy grave-warrior, slowly approached from the entry of the bay. His gate was slow but steady, his large, muscled frame healed from the injuries he'd sustained protecting Leah. There was something in his eyes that told Draven he knew far more than appeared. That he saw more of life and death and the realms between than most could ever comprehend.

 "Are you to be my guide, Ook?" Draven asked, knowing the power as well as the ramifications his question held for both he and the Darengy. He'd thought of his and Kuthar's plan, but that, thanks to Kantella, had been shot to hell.

The sight and nearness of the Darengy stirred him, called to him. He was out of options. He knew that to knowingly request a grave-warrior to walk with you in life was to be tied to them in death. One soul protecting the other. A bond stronger than brothers.  Eternally a binding of blood and soul. He knew and didn't care.

 Like Leah, something called to him. Or maybe it was because of Leah. But no, that couldn't be. The connection was there before. Sizzling along his flesh.  Tempting him to remember. But remember what, he wasn't sure. All that he was certain of was that if he wanted to find Leah he needed the Darengy to help him. Needed him at his side; a part of him.

Ook stood still, his back ramrod straight, his odd, tri-colored eyes boring into Draven's as if he could see the ever after. By accepting the Prince's request, he would be forever beholden to him. His personal guard in life and death. It was a great honor Prince Draven was set to bestow upon him. And yet, it would mean great difficulty for the Prince.

Everyone knew their history. The Darengy had been driven to near extinction at the hands of the Elders. Fear had driven them to all but decimate their people. If Ook accepted the Prince's offer, he would be blood bound to him as long as Prince Draven lived. Where Prince Draven walked, Ook would follow. If The Wasting claimed him, it would spread to Ook as well. For as long as Draven lived, so too would Ook. As the Prince thrived, Ook would thrive as well. But for now, he would never want again.

The temptation was great, but Ook's loneliness greater. "Why?" Ook questioned, needing the confirmation he could not find in the Prince's dark eyes.

Draven sighed and stepped towards the grave-warrior, side-stepping Grange's dead body. "My father once told me that the worth of a man lay not in his words, but in his actions. In the span of time that I've known you I have seen you protect the weak, the suffering and maligned at the cost of your own life. Even Death needs such an ally at his side," Draven stated with a twist to his smile, his dark eyes calculating.

The Darengy considered his words. It was true that Draven's reputation as a cold and malicious warrior was whispered in the shadows of the night. His victories over his enemies were told like fairytales to younglings at bedtime. Great men feared him, and foolish men died at his hands.

To be bound to such a warrior would be a great honor, indeed, but Ook was not a glory hound. He had followed no man and no Liege before or since the great wars between the Elders and the Shadow Dwellers. Yet, he knew as certain as he breathed that this Prince and his Over-lord would bring great change to their peoples. He had seen the visions. Felt the coming changes in his blood. Had foreseen the outcome in the dust of death and the winds of time.

"Is that the only reason?" Ook questioned, needing to be certain.

"There is this." Draven held his hand just inches above the flesh of Ook's chest.

Fire danced in his veins. Lightning tripped along his Ook's skin. Reason and knowing filled him. Yes, this Ook would do. For his people, and for himself.

"So be it," Ook calmly agreed.

http://www.amazon.com/-/e/B0054Z6OQK

For generations prophets have foreseen the birth of the Shadow Seer, the oracle of dark visions and fallen kingdoms. But by the time of Sorron, King of Carnia, their warnings have mostly been forgotten and his name is known only to a handful of scholars. When Sorron's grandson, Prince Candale, falls deathly ill, the Seer's legends are brought to light once again by his saviour, a witch named Mayrila. She believes that Candale is the fulfilment of those long forgotten prophecies. She believes that he is the Shadow Seer...

Excerpt:

It was hot in my room, dark and stifling. The heavy red curtains were drawn against the window in such a way that not even a bare trickle of light could seep into the room, and the window behind them was firmly locked. The healer had suggested it a month or so ago, convinced that sunlight and fresh air would actually make me worse, but I didn't know how that was possible, considering the fact I was dying.

Not that anyone would say that to my face, of course, for fear of upsetting me, perhaps, or just because they didn't want to accept it themselves, that a seventeen-year-old boy, Prince Candale of Carnia, was dying, but I knew it all the same. It wasn't a complete surprise to me either, as I'd never been particularly strong, suffering from seizures all of my life. But I'd never thought that I would die like this, wasting away in the darkness of my room.

It had all started innocently enough, with a few bad headaches and the odd dizzy spell. After I'd almost collapsed in the Great Hall one evening, my father, Prince Gerian, had insisted that I go to bed. I had gone, complaining the whole time, insisting it was just a bad summer's cold and that I'd be all right again in a few days. Only I'd gotten worse, and quickly, too, and within a few weeks I was bedridden.

Some days were better than others. On the good days I could sit up; I could even hold a conversation with someone, although it might take me a while to get my words out. But on the bad days I was unable to do anything for myself; somebody had to wash me, feed me, even turn me over. It was something I had found embarrassing, at first, but after a while, as the bad days had become more frequent, it had no longer seemed to matter. In fact, I had become grateful for the help. My strength had gone and it had taken my dignity with it, leaving me trapped in my bedroom, in my red-covered bed, at the mercy of the healers who came, and went, and failed all the while, to cure me.

Book Review: The Sleep Room by FR Tallis

The Sleep Room
by FR Tallis
Psychological Thriller
3 Stars
Review Copy from Amazon Vine

Blurb:

When promising young psychiatrist James Richardson is offered the job opportunity of a lifetime by the charismatic Dr. Hugh Maitland, he is thrilled. Setting off to take up his post at Wyldehope Hall in deepest Suffolk, Richardson doesn't look back. One of his tasks is to manage Maitland's most controversial project--a pioneering therapy in which extremely disturbed patients are kept asleep for months. If this radical and potentially dangerous procedure is successful, it could mean professional glory for both doctors.

As Richardson settles into his new life, he begins to sense something uncanny about the sleeping patients--six women, forsaken by society. Why is Maitland unwilling to discuss their past lives? Why is the trainee nurse so on edge when she spends nights alone with them? And what can it mean when all the sleepers start dreaming at the same time? In this atmospheric reinvention of the ghost story, Richardson finds himself questioning everything he knows about the human mind, as he attempts to uncover the shocking secrets of The Sleep Room...

Review:

On the surface this book seems that it has all the ingredients of a ghost story. An old, isolated house now used as a small psychiatric hospital, a previous doctor who left due to mysterious circumstances, unexplained pehenomena.

I really, really wanted it to be a ghost story, but in the end you find out it wasn't a ghost story at all but something completely different. It's a bait and switch on the part of the author and I came away feeling cheated when it wasn't what I expected.

There is a twist at the end, but I guessed it long before we got there.

This is not a bad book, in fact it's a very interesting historical novel dealing with the disputes between the two main branches of psychiatry in the 1950's - "the talking cure" and treating mental illnesses with lots of medication, electro-shock therapy and narcosis (keeping the patient asleep for most of the day.)

The writing flows easily and you get drawn in. James Richardson starts off as an interesting character and quite sympathetic but then he lost a lot of my sympathy with his misogynist treatment of Jane, the nurse he was supposed to be in love with. He knew she'd had other lovers before him and it didn't seem to bother him until he discovered she'd also been with his boss. Suddenly he does an about turn and she's a scarlet woman and everything else! I know it was set in the 1950s, but come on!

This is interesting as a historical novel, but it is not a ghost story, which is what I'd been looking for when I ordered it.

Author Interview: Alexandrea Weis

About the Author:

Her first novel, To My Senses, introduced readers to the world of Nicci Beauvoir and garnered numerous awards and rave reviews. Her popular second Nicci Beauvoir novel, Recovery, won the Gold Medal for best romantic suspense from The Reader’s Favorite Book Awards 2011, and was named best Romantic Suspense novel by the Spring 2011 NABE Pinnacle Book Awards.

Her fourth novel, Broken Wings, won best Contemporary Romance by the NABE Pinnacle Book Awards in 2012, was a Silver Medal winner in the ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Awards for Romance, as well as a finalist in the USA Book Awards for Romance in 2012, and a finalist in the Reader’s Favorite Book Awards for Contemporary Romance for 2012. Her last novel, Acadian Waltz was a winner at Readers’ Favorite Book Awards finalist for Honorable Mention in Best Contemporary Romance and Best Southern Fiction Finalist. A permitted wildlife rehabber with the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries, Weis rescues orphaned and injured wildlife. She lives with her husband and pets in New Orleans.

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

I let the story come as I write it. I usually have an idea, and perhaps an ending, but that’s about it.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

No, I stay pretty focused on the flow and try not to let too many characters clog the plot. Some do outshine others, but they never drown out the story.

What is your favourite food?

Japanese vegie tempura.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Both. Some night I am up past one am, and then I am up early every morning because I have a house full of animals to feed.

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?

Greece and Egypt. I am a hug ancient history fanatic, and that is where the best of ancient history is for me.

Do distant places feature in your books?

No. My books tend to stick close to my New Orleans roots. All New Orleanians are like that. We love our city and try to highlight it as much as we can.

Do you listen to music while writing?

No. I like peace to think.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

The Ghosts of Rue Dumaine is a ghostly love story about a woman healing from a broken marriage and returning to the childhood home where she was happy. But the home is haunted by a ghost, someone she befriended as a child, and now that she has grown into a woman, their friendship turns romantic. But Gaston is a ghost of a plantation owner who died in the yellow fever epidemic of 1853, and being together is impossible for them, or is it? There is voodoo, intrigue, lust and a whole lot of New Orleans ambience set into this novel. A great Halloween read.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

A great deal. I began writing and publishing my books six years ago, and a lot has changed since then. Self-published is no longer a dirty word, and many really good authors are self-published. The business is always fluid and changing. With ebooks taking over the market, it will be interesting to see where it goes.

Is there anything you would do differently?

No, not really. I’ve enjoyed the way I have eased into it, and preferred to go at my own pace.

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?

The city where I was born and raised has influenced my writing the most. I think the eclectic atmosphere of New Orleans tends to bring out all those creative thoughts, and the people are truly inspiring. They make the best characters for books, and I have been privileged enough to know quite a few unique individuals.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

Write. Just write and the rest will come. The only way you get better at writing and find your voice is to keep doing it, and give yourself time. The Sistine Chapel took a while to develop and so will your style.

What are three words that describe you?

Assertive, hard-working, and astute.

What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?

Ian Fleming, Casino Royale. He was a master at writing characters.

Together, they must journey to a mysterious land of eternal spring and return before the kingdom is overrun by evil.

Excerpt:

Prologue

“I’m sorry, Yillmara,” the young elf maid said as she wept. “The child does not live.” She held the tiny bundle toward his mother, who slowly took him from the maid’s arms. Yillmara looked upon the lifeless face of her tiny son and wept softly. She closed her eyes and pressed him to her breast. After a moment, though still exhausted from the birth, she rose from her bed with her son in her arms.

“You mustn’t, my lady! You need to rest!” The maid pleaded with her and touched her arm as if to stop her, but Yillmara continued walking. She made her way from her rooms and stepped out into the light of the dawn. It was a cool spring morning, and the sound of the river danced throughout the forest that was home to Yillmara’s people, the Westerling Elves.

Yillmara approached the river slowly, earnestly. She trod lightly so not to offend the Spirit of the river. With her son still in her arms, she walked into the water and fell to her knees, begging for the life of her child. “River Spirit, hear my plea and grant my son his life. He deserves the chance to live, to grow, and to know the beauty of this forest. He should be given the chance to hear the music of the river.”

Slowly, she placed the lifeless body of her son into the water. Hoping for an answer from the River Spirit was foolish, she knew, but what matter was that compared to the life of her child. She covered her eyes and wept. As her tears hit the water, she heard a soft voice around her. It caressed her and consoled her grief. The River Spirit had come. The young mother’s weeping ceased, and she felt pure serenity. “I will gladly trade my life for his,” she said with all the strength of her heart.

With that assurance, the Spirit granted her request. The mother slid gently down into the river, and the child opened his sapphire eyes. The young maid came running to the river’s edge along with Yillmara’s life mate. The maid took the child from the river and rushed him inside to get him warm.

Though he knew his love’s body would fade into the river, Ryllak waded into the water to be near her. He could see her lying serenely in the water, her face peaceful as if sleeping. Reaching his arms out for her came naturally, but it was no use. He could no longer touch his beautiful Yillmara. She was gone forever.

The river had granted the child his life, and in time, the river would reclaim him.

Serissa Book 1 Serissa Series
by M. Cundy
YA/Paranormal/Fantasy/Romance
Amazon (free this weekend)

Singing beautifully is more than a defining talent, its Serissa Moore’s destiny, but fame comes with a high price and a responsibility- a price that means questioning everything about life, and a responsibility no human is capable of.

Seventeen-year-old Serissa leaves home after graduation to follow around a new band with her friends. Only she already knows the lead singer, Gabe Livingston, who requests her to sing a duet. Scared of performing, and unsure about trusting the guy who once threw pebbles at her on the playground, she knows she should walk away. But in exchange for one song he promises to explain how she was the only one who saw him glowing during the first show of the tour, and why the polished stone he gifts her soon after transports her into a world she knows too well for having never visited.

Insistent on answers for accumulating odd events, Gabe explains her voice has a unique ability and her musical commitment involves her life, not one song. She also learns her recently acquired boyfriend isn’t who he says he is. Over the summer Serissa will have to overcome stage fright, elude her crazy soon-to-be ex, and hopefully, after figuring out where she is really from, have time to change everything about life as we know it.

Author Interview: Pembroke Sinclair

About the Author:

In 2009, eTreasures Publishing published my first novel, a sci fi adventure story.  Since then, they have published my two YA zombie novels, my religious zombie novella, two children’s picture books, and two novellas with romantic elements.  I have an urban fantasy novel about dragons and a vampire novelette that was published by MuseItUp Publishing.  Musa Publishing has published my novelette with romantic elements and a collection of short stories.  I have a middle grade urban fantasy novel that was published by Little Devil Books.  My nonfiction book about slasher films was published by Scarecrow Press.

Writing is my passion.  I enjoy creating fantastic worlds and memorable characters.  I’m an active promoter of my works and love to talk to readers at book signings and readings.  Doing giveaways on Goodreads has been an exciting experience, and having contests for readers has been fun.  I actively promote various authors on my blog and participate in blog tours to promote my own work.

I write under several different pen names.  For my children’s titles, I write under J.D. Pooker, and for my YA and adult novels, I write under Pembroke Sinclair.  My nonfiction work is done under my real name.

I am a member of the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers and am on a committee to create membership criteria for iPAL, which is a sister group to the Published Authors Liaison group and focuses on independent and self-published authors.  I am also a member of the ALA and really enjoy doing library visits.

Goodread:  http://www.goodreads.com/Pembroke

Twitter:  https://twitter.com/PembrokeSinclair

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

I try to have an idea in my head of where the story will go, but when I actually sit down to write, I let the characters take me where they need to go.  My characters have sometimes deviated from what I thought they would do, and I really enjoy that.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

Absolutely!  And I let them!

What is your favourite food?

Anything with cinnamon in it and no nuts.  I also really like corned beef hash and eggs.  Mmmmm.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Neither, really.  I have to be up with my kids, so there’s no choice in that matter, which means I don’t stay up overly late because I’m exhausted.

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?

I would like to go to Alaska.  I think that would be awesome.  And I would also really like to see Scotland and Ireland.  It’s always fun to see new places and experience new things.

Do distant places feature in your books?

Not really, no.  Unless you’re talking about my science fiction, and then it’s made up distant places.

Do you listen to music while writing?

I do not.  I used to, but now I like complete silence so I can hear my characters speak to me.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

This story was based off a dream I had.  It wasn’t as detailed as the story, but the framework of being trapped on a boat with someone was prominent, and I filled in the blanks.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

I’d like to say I’ve learned patience, but that’s not true.  I still want instant answers.  But I have learned how to fill the waiting time with other projects, so I always have something in line and ready to be published.

Is there anything you would do differently?

Hmmm.  That’s kind of a tough question.  I’m sure if I could I might do something different, but since I can’t change anything, I’m just really happy to be where I’m at.

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?

My friend Tamara was a huge influence on getting me back into writing.  As an undergraduate and graduate in college, several professors shook my confidence and I didn’t think I would ever write again.  She helped me get through the rough patch.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

Be patient and never stop learning.

What are three words that describe you?

Tenacious, dedicated, impatient.

What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?

I have several favorite books and authors.  I’m an English major, I love to read!

Blurb of your latest release or coming soon book

Book Description:

“When the dead need to speak, she must listen…"

Artist and Egyptologist Lily Evans struggles with her newly discovered psychic talents, while trying to get her life back to normal now that her mother is in a mental institution and the man Lily loves is far away in England. But "normal" is the last thing she finds.

When her best friend Katy takes her to a Celtic Faire, Lily meets a druid fortune-teller, who warns her that she can “never escape the Other.” Frightened and angry, Lily ignores his dire warning and stumbles across an eerie old portrait of a beautiful woman, who has something to tell her.

With the help of the enigmatic druid and his gifted friends, Lily embarks on a dangerous journey to unravel the mysteries of the portrait, the tarot card reader, an ancient book and whispers of witchcraft. She must discover the truth behind them all…or risk losing her very soul.

Excerpt:

The drive home was mostly silent while I struggled with the emotions raging through me. There was no doubt about it, Caliman's reading had been eerily accurate. He'd known of my psychic experiences and my efforts to try to forget them. For months now, I'd been telling myself that the visions of someone else's past life had somehow been the product of emotional stress. I was encouraged in this belief by my ex-fiancé Stephen and the psychiatrist he had recommended.

Dr. Carson's pills and calm, rational treatment had almost lulled me into seeing his point of view. Since Dame Ursula Allingham― the eccentric archaeologist who had started it all― was back in England, the paranormal was completely out of my life. And so was her grandson, Kent Ashton, the man I loved so much…

"Oh my God!" Katy's shriek and the squealing of brakes jerked me out of my thoughts. The car swerved off into the middle of the road, which was luckily free of any other traffic. Stunned, I looked around, wondering what had caused such a panic. I glimpsed some kind of large animal bounding off into the trees. "What was that? A deer?"

Katy pulled off to the side, switched on the hazards and sat there, shaking. It was a moment before she could speak. "I-I'm not sure. It could've been a dog, but it seemed… wild, like a wolf."

"There aren't any wolves around here. They live closer to the mountains, downstate. Maybe it was a husky. I hope it's not lost."

Katy let out a slow breath. "I think I lost ten years off my life. It ran right in front of us. Whew! That was close."

"Well, it's a good thing you were paying attention. Nice reflexes there." I unfastened my seatbelt. "I'll drive the rest of the way. You deserve a chance to relax."

Katy hesitated. "Okay, if you're sure. I feel like a bowl of Jell-O." She got out of the car and we exchanged places. "It's really weird though. That thing— whatever it was— was huge. And its eyes? I could have sworn they were glowing."

Book Spotlight:The Devil Inside the Beltway by Michael J. Daugherty

Devil Inside the Beltway
by Michael J. Daugherty
Non-Fiction
Book Trailer: http://youtu.be/fuNZbqXIV_M
Goodreads

Michael J. Daugherty, author and CEO of LabMD in Atlanta, Georgia, uncovers and details an extraordinary government surveillance story that compromised national security and invaded the privacy of tens of millions of online users worldwide. Unbelievable from beginning to end, you'll be shocked at what is really going on behind every closed door in Washington. A riveting true political thriller, the pace is breathless, the arguments compelling, and the iron will of Daugherty transforms him from government prey to government whistleblower.

The Devil Inside the Beltway is a compelling true story that begins when an aggressive security surveillance company, with retired General Wesley Clark on its advisory board, magically acquires the private health information of thousands of LabMD's patients. This company, Tiversa, campaigns for a "fee" from LabMD to "remedy" the problem. When Michael J. Daugherty refuses to pay, Tiversa follows up by handing the file over to the FTC. Daugherty reveals that the company was already working with Dartmouth, having received a significant portion of a $24,000,000 grant from Homeland Security, to surveil for files. The reason for the investigation was this: Peer to peer software companies have back doors built into their technology that allows for illicit and unapproved file sharing. When individual work stations are accessed, as in the case of LabMD, proprietary information can be taken. Tiversa, as part of their assignment, acquired over 14 million files, financial, medical and military data during their search.

Daugherty's book documents a frighteningly systematic and dishonest investigation by one of the US Government's most important agencies. The consequences of their actions will have a chilling effect on Americans and their businesses for years.

Book Description:

Private investigator RB Kendrick makes her living nailing cheating spouses, digging up other dirt to help in a divorce, finding long-lost relatives, and occasionally sniffing out criminal activity and fraud.

When she takes a job to find a missing girl, she has no idea she is headed for the most dangerous case of her career. Usually, her ability to read minds gives her an edge. But when the people she’s hunting are also telepaths, that advantage is limited.

The search takes her into the dark underbelly of telepathic society, where anything, and anyone, is for sale. She discovers that telepathic women and girls are being trafficked as the ultimate sex slaves.

With people trying to kill her, she’s on the run, not knowing who she can trust. Will she find the missing girl, or become a victim herself?

***

Excerpt:

I walked into the restaurant to meet my prospective client, scanned the diners and slipped into the booth with her. She started to say something, then her eyes widened and nothing came out of her open mouth.

“Mrs. Sanders? I’m RB Kendrick,” I said, extending my hand.

“Oh, my,” she breathed. “The description you gave me is wholly inadequate.” She stared at me for a minute, then said, “Copper.”

Confused, I looked around. There weren’t any police in there. “Huh?” I said intelligently.

“Your hair. It’s not ginger, it’s like polished copper. It shines.”

Women notice different things than men. As I suspected from our conversation on the phone, Sylvia Sanders was a norm and so was her husband. What I read in her mind matched what she told me verbally. It’s so much easier when clients tell you the truth. I understood why she had suspicions about her husband. The changes in his behavior and schedule screamed other woman to me also.

“So what do you want, Mrs. Sanders? A report, photos, a confrontation? A basic report of what and who he is or is not doing will run a thousand pounds. Photos catching them in the act are another thousand, if I can get them. Unlike the telly, most people don’t conveniently provide evidence in front of windows with the shades open. If you want to confront him in the act, I’ll accompany you for an additional fifteen hundred pounds.”

She blanched at my rates.

“If what he’s doing isn’t obvious, and I have to put him under surveillance for an extended period, my rates are five thousand a week.”

“I don’t think that will be necessary,” she said with a quiver in her voice. She gave me a thousand and I wrote down all the pertinent information.

“I’ll check on it this afternoon. I’m going to be out of town for a few days,” I told her. “If I don’t find anything by tomorrow morning, I’ll call you when I get back.”

“Thank you, Miss Kendrick. This has been going on for several months. I don’t think it’s going to change.”

“Mrs. Sanders, you need to think about what you’re going to do if your suspicions are correct. Are you going to confront him and hope he ends it? Or do you plan to divorce him? It’s something you should decide before hand.”

“I want a divorce,” she said. “I know he’s cheating on me. He called a little while ago and told me he had to work late this evening.”

~~~
Edward Sanders worked about a mile away. I took the Tube to his building. About twenty minutes after I arrived, I saw him come out and head for the Tube station. Obviously, he wasn’t working late.
I followed him and sat behind him on the train. I read his mind to get his destination, then sat back and used my phone to check my email.
When we left the tube station, I took a slightly different route than Sanders to reach the house of his mistress. I stood across the street and watched as she answered the door for him. I could understand why he was attracted to her. She was even more beautiful than what I had expected from the images in his mind.
I read her mind, also. She was the lonely trophy wife of a successful businessman who traveled often. Edward Sanders was good looking, and twenty years younger than his mistress’s husband. She wasn’t in love with him, but considered him a wonderful diversion. He wasn’t in love with her, either, but was infatuated that such a rich and beautiful young woman wanted him.
The shades in the living room weren’t drawn, and the amorous couple started their activities immediately upon his entering the house. I pulled my camera from my bag and walked across the street and across her lawn. There was a small tree in an ugly plastic pot sitting in the middle of the lawn, and I had to detour around it.
I could see glimpses of the lovers through the living room window, but reflections in the glass prevented me from a good view. It appeared he was doing her on the dining room table. This was going to be the easiest thousand pounds I’d ever made.
I was so focused on what was going on inside that I didn’t see the hole hidden by the small tree sitting in front of it. I should have realized what a potted tree was doing on the lawn. Someone planned to plant it.
I took a step and my left foot found only air. The world spun around and the camera slipped out of my grasp. My chin hit something hard and I bit my tongue.
When I came to my senses, my right leg was sticking straight up and the rest of me lay twisted in the bottom of a hole. My chin felt like it was on fire, and my tongue hurt like mad. It took me some time to get myself situated and crawl out onto the grass. I looked back. The hole was about two feet deep. I spit, and a spot of bright red blood landed on the green lawn.
I picked up my camera and checked it to make sure it was still working. Looking around, I didn’t see anyone. I waited until my head stopped spinning, then crept up to the window. They were still going at it on the table. I took some pictures, but had to wait for them to shift positions so I could get his face. After a few minutes, I had all I needed.
A sudden noise behind me caused me to turn around. A white-haired woman with binoculars hanging from her neck stuck her head out of the window of the house next door.
“You clumsy cow,” she shouted at me. “Get out of the way. You’re blocking the view.”
I retreated in a hurry, and she raised the binoculars, trained on the window through which I’d been snapping pictures.
Case closed. I walked back to the Tube and went home, holding a handkerchief to my still-bleeding mouth.
